Defense ministry sources indicated that Gur would not be returning to his Geneva assignment, but there was no immediate announce- ment of who would replace him there. The Geneva negotiators have held six sessions, their last over a week ago, and were to have met again Tues- day. It was announced on Monday, however, that furth- er talks have been put off until Jan. 25, apparently in view of U. S. Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger's current efforts to engineer a top - level Israeli - Egyptian agreement on disengagement. The Egyptian negotiators in Geneva returned to Cairo Monday. The Israeli team has been home for a week. There was no indication from official sources as to why Gur was returned to ac- tive military duty at this time. Prior to his appoint- ment as chief Israeli mili- tary negotiator in Geneva he had served as military at- tache in Washington and be- fore that had commanded Israel's northern front. Gur replaced Maj. Gen. Itzhak Hoffi, who command- ed the Syrian front during the Yom Kippur War and has now been assigned to general headquarters as chief of operations. Another top- level shift in the army an- nounced Tuesday was the appointment of Maj. Gen. Avraham Adan, an armed corps commander, to com- mand the southern front that includes most of Sinai and the front with Egypt on both banks of the Suez Canal. He replaces Maj . Gen. Israel Tal, who has been reassigned to g e n e r al headquarters where he previously served as deputy chief of staff. Egyptian Aide's Appointment to Britain Raises Protest Storm (Continued from Page 1) fascist organizations in Brit- ain should now be permitted to come here in such capa- city. The entire British com- munity would be shocked to think that a person who could act in this fashion should now be corning again in this ca- pacity." The notorious Shazly pam- phlet was brought to the at. tention of members of Par- liament of all parties and British veterans and student groups last week by Moshe Barneah, secretary of the Is- raeli branch of Amnesty In- ternational. He noted that thousands of them were distributed to Egyptian soldiers by the Army Information Service with instructions signed by Shazly, who was chief of staff of the Egyptian army at the time of the Yom Kip- pur War. The instructions ordered Egyptian soldiers to "kill mercilessly" all Israel* POWs. "Hit them, kill them wherever you find them as they (the Jews) are a na- tion of treacherous charac- ter. They pretend to give up only to kill you in treacher- ous ways," the pamphlet said. A spokesman for the Egyp- tian Embassy here "strong- ly denied" that the former Egyptian chief of staff had at any time given orders to kill Israeli POWs. The spokesman claimed that such orders bearing Shazly's name were forged by Israeli veterans organiza- tions. Intermarriage Threatening Reform Jews? '_NEW YORK—Reform Ju- uaism in America, currently marking the 100th anniver- sary of its central congrega- tional _body, the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions, faces serious problems of an erosion of its strength through intermarriage and lack of strong theological commitment. This conclusion is reached by Prof. Sefton D. Temkin, of the Department of Judaic Studies of the State Univers- ity of New York at Albany, in the lead article of the 1973 American Jewish Year Book, which has just been pub- lished. The Year Book is pub- lished jointly by the Ameri- can Jewish Committee and the Jewish Publication So- ciety of America. that homes were demolished Or burned and that Israeli authorities forcibly collected Egyptian currency from the local population. According to Doron, "No member of the civilian popu- lation of the areas concerned was evacuated therefrom un- less he so desired. . . . In some cases residents were assisted at their request, to leave the proximity of the front lines and to move deeper into the territory under Israeli control." Doron said this fact could be attested to by representa- tives of the International Committee of the Red Cross "who freely visited the area." No homes were "demolished or burned down except for those which were destroyed in the course of military operations near the front lines. Some structures, how- ever, burned down as a re- sult of Egyptian bombard- ment," Doron wrote. He stated that "It is com- pletely untrue that Israeli authorities forcibly collected Egyptian currency from the LOD (ZINS)—The Lod res- taurant, which until now em- ployed waiters, went Amer- ican style adopting self-serv- ice. The price for an "all-you- can-eat" breakfast is IL 9 (about $2.25). It consists of eggs, prepared in three ways, a variety of fish, various cheeses, bread and coffee. "The Israeli Def ens e Forces have provided water supplies from El Arish to- gether with regular food sup- plies to the local population" as witnessed by Red Cross representatives, Doron's let- ter said. He said the Israeli presence had changed nothing with respect to schools in the area which were closed down by Egyptian authorities after the 1967 war when the area "was transformed by the Egyptians into a military zone." A more modest continental breakfast costs IL 4.60. Din- ner is served on the same basis allowing the guests to feast to their hearts' content for IL 25. RED MAGEN DAVID WE CAN FIT YOU! Doron also denied an Egyp- tian charge that agricultural activities in the area were harmed by the Israeli occu- pation. He said a majority of the farmers left as a result of the Egyptian authorities closing off fresh water sup- plies. Friday, January 13, 1974=1 Restaurant in Lod Goes Western-Style . Israeli Statement at UN Repudiates Egyptian Charges of Violation of Civilian Human Rights UNITED NATIONS (JTA) —Israel has made a point-by- point refutation of Egyptian allegations that it violated the rights of the inhabitants of the west bank of the Suez Canal in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention on the human rights of local populations in occupied ter- ritories. The alleged breaches were dealt with in a letter sub- mitted to Dr. Gonzalo Facio of Costa Rica, president of the UN Security Council, by the acting permanent Repre- sentative of Israel, Ambassa- dor Jacob Doron.
