Dylan Described
as 'Ultra-Zionist'

Editor, The Jewish News:
"Kissinger lost his pajamas
— in a laundry, an embassy
aide said," I read in a recent
news story. This remindsme
of how I, in 1924, was with-
out a clean shirt when, like
Kissinger, was "busy solving
world problems" as a mem-
ber of the debating team of
the City of Detroit (since in-
corporated into Wayne State
University).
I didn't know enough to
take an extra shirt along on
my first journey away from
•home to debate United States
entry into the League of Na-
tions. Our debating coach, a
squat Swede named Neilson
had a conniption fit and
made me wear his oversized
shirt. But it didn't help, the
U.S. never joined the League
of Nations, whose headquar-

Editor, The Jewish News:
Concerning God's ancient
people Israel, the prophet
Amos has said, "I will bring
again the captivity of my
people Israel, and they shall
build the waste cities, and
inhabit them; and they shall
plant vineyards, and drink
the wine thereof . . . and I
will plant them upon their

land, and they shall no more
be pulled up out of their land
which I have given them,
all remaining
saith the Lord thy God."
Amos 9:14, 15.

ses and many other similar
verses which are to be found

Further, it is our convic-
tion that the nations of the
world which are dependent
upon the Near East for oil
should not allow themselves
to be pressured in selling Is-
rael short. We can and must
tighten our belts and go with-
out.
Our feelings and sentiments
are expressed in the words
of Jeremiah, "Therefore fear
thou not, 0 my servant Ja-

be dismayed, 0 Israel; for,
lo, I will save thee from afar,

Finally, out of love for Is-
rael, we heed the enjoinder
of the Psalms which states:
"Pray for the peace of Jer-
usalem." Our prayer is, "The

week featured prominently
the Bob Dylan story, with
Dylan being given the front
cover.
As Newsweek explained,
"In Chicago for the start of
a $5,000,000 tour, the intensely
private Dylan granted asso-
ciate editor Maureen Orth a
rare exclusive interview."
In that interview appears
this paragraph:
"Super-Dylanologist A. J.
Weberman, who became
famous by going through
Dylan's garbage cans for
relics of Saint Bob, now
thinks the tour smells sus-
piciously like a Zionist plot.
`He's doing it now because of
the war in the Middle East,'
Weberman insists. 'He is an
ultra-Zionist. He is doing the
tour to raise money for Is-
rael. He has given large
sums of money to Israel in
the name of Abraham Zim-
merman (Dylan's father's
name). He's very ethne-
oriented."I got blue eyes,
says Dylan. 'I don't know
how Jewish that is.' "

ters was the Palais des Na-
tions in Geneva, where now
a peace conference is on.
In 1924, Americans pre-
ferred to "keep cool with
Coolidge" and keep out of
world affairs as much as
possible. Nevertheless, the
Anglo-American Treaty of
1924, in effect, made us a
signatory to the League of
Nations Palestine Mandate,
even if it was, also in effect,
nullified by tortured interpre-
tation until President Tru-
man came along and called
things by their right names.
According to the League of
Nations Mandate, inherited
by the United Nations under
Article 80 of its Charter, "the
historical connection of the
Jewish People with Pales-
tine" provides "grounds for
reconstituting their national
home in- that country."
Rights guaranteed to the
"non-Jewish" inhabitants did
not involve "reconstituting"
any corporate entity, for
which, indeed, there was no
historical warrant.

No Superiority
No Jew, however learned
and pious, may consider him-
self an io4 a better than a fel-
low-Jew, Lowever ignorant or
irreligious the latter may be.
This is confirmed by the law
that if a learned and pious
Jew were commanded to slay
the ignorant and impious
one, or be himself slain, he
must accept death rather
than kill the other. No one
can tell whose blood is red-
der and whose life is more
important in the eyes of God.
If a man in this crucial mo-
ment has no right to deem
himself superior to another,
what right can he possibly
have to do so on less critical
occasions? — Rabbi Bunam.
