The officials are Dr. Edmond Lipsitz, director of education and culture of the Canadian Jewish Congress central region, and Yehuda Noy , executive director of the United Israel Appeal in Ontario. They discussed the prob- lem in interviews with the Canadian Jewish News. Noy said that "within the next generation, there will be a lot of these communities without Jewish population." Dr. Lipsitz cited assimila- tion, the departure of young Jews seeking education or jobs and the death of older members, adding that the majority of the small towns face a rapid decline in their Jewish populations. NEW YORK — Sam Roth- berg, general chairman of the Israel Bond Organization, an- nounced that the sale of Is- rael Bonds in 1973 produced a record-breaking total of $502,137,550, compared with $271,000,000 in Israel Bond proceeds in 1972 and $217,000,- 000 in 1967. During the past 23 years, the Israel Bond Organization has been the central source of funds for the development of every major aspect of Is- rael's economy. Special tribute was paid by Rothberg to the Jews of Canada who, under the lea- dership of Allan Bronfman, national president of the Is- rael Bond campaign in that country, sold an extraordin- ary total of $45,226,650 in Is- rael Bonds in 1973 as against $24,458,000 in 1972. Blaze in Tel Aviv May Cover Theft TEL AVIV (JTA)—Police said that the fire that forced the evacuation of several hundred guests and employes from the Dan Hotel was a cover for robbery. The blaze broke out in the Tifany Club which occupies the basement of the 11-story structure on the Tel Aviv beach front. According to police the club's safe was found opened and cash miss- ing. Police said the safe was opened with a key but the thieves tried to make it ap- pear that it had been forced open. Joins Durbin Realty Dr. Lipsitz cited five such communities in which he said organized Jewish communal life had vanished in the past five to ten years. He said that for the remaining Jew- ish families in those towns difficulties were compounded in trying to maintain Jewish education, a synagogue, Jew- ish programs and access to kosher meat and poultry. Despite "limited resourc- es," the CJC provides expert guidance, makes educational facilities available and helps in the location of rabbis, teachers and cantors. Noy said the UIA provides some Jewish ties and identity by making available program- ming, entertainment and up- to-date information on Israel. The report on small town Jewish communities and CJC efforts to help them was the second in three months. Ac- cording to the first report, last October, the CJC had been spurred by the problem into an effort to bring such communities back "into the mainstream of Jewish life," according to Mrs. Joey Rich- man, chairman of community services committee of the CJC eastern region. Mrs. Richman cited a variety of efforts to assist Jews in such communities: Joe Medwed has joined the staff of the Durbin Co. Real- tors at its Southfield office, 28200 Southfield. Medwed has had many years' experience in the sale of residential homes and can be reached at 559-8181. Rabbi Balfour Brickner, director of the New York Federation of Reform Syna- gogues, said such a coalition could strive for "improved housing, effective schools, in- creased job opportunities."
