Vatican's Meddling: Call for Action on Jerusalem

By YEHOSHUA TADMOR

Israeli Political Analyst and
Commentator for Haaretz

For six years the relations
between Israel and the Vati-
can were fairly good. Almost
every request or demand con-
cerning the Christian Holy
Places, and the Catholic
Church in particular, receiv-
ed immediate and sympa-
thetic attention. There have
even been certain Christian
factors in the country who
claim, not always with jus-
tice, that Israel was evincing
particular favoritism to the
Catholic Church because it
regarded it as the strongest
body with whom some sort
of dialogue could be reached,
so that the foundations might
be laid for some permanent
arrangement, for supervision
of the holy places.
The Vatican had acqui-
esced in the fact that Israel
rules in Jerusalem and that
it was beSt to come to terms
with it. As proof one might
cite that contacts, talks and
exchange of sAi-official
visits, most impoi-tant of
which was Prime Minister
Golda Meir's to the Pope at
the Vatican.
Recently, however, there
has been a change of atti-
tude insofar as the Vatican
"State-Secretariat" (the Vat-
ican Foreign Ministry) is
concerned. Certain actively
inimical forces have tried
to bring about a change of
the attitude toward the sta-
tus of Jerusalem. Their ob-
jective is clear: it is to try
and revive the plan for the
internationalization of the
city. What was regarded. as
obvious until some weeks
ago, not only by Israel but
also by the Catholic Church,
is again turning into some-
thing with a large -question-
mark attached to it. The
rabidly anti-Israeli Frererico

Alessandrini has come onto
the scene again, and certain
influential factors in the
Catholic Church are seeking
to reopen deliberations about
the internationalization of
Jerusalem with the aid of
Arab, African and other
-
Christian factors.
There is activity and string
pulling even in Jerusalem
and with certain Catholic
states. The emperor of Abys-
sinia recently paid a visit to
the Vatican. With him was
Jaafer Anumeri, the ruler of
Sudan, and certain senior
representatives of Liberia
and Tanzania. It was perhaps
to be expected that Emperor
Hailie Selassie would raise
the question o f the holy
places and the status of Jer-
usalem. The Coptic Church
has traditional interest in
the Holy City, but until the
last few weeks it had no com-
plaints about Israel's treat-
ment of their affairs. The
emperor's intentions are
clear: not only to try and
jump on the wagon of the
Jerusalem issue, but to se-
cure for himself • and his
country more tangible back-
ing on the part of the Catho-
lic Church and of Catholic
governments, and of the
Christian world generally.
As a result of the increasing
influence of the Arab states
in the African continent, the
emperor is perturbed by the
rising strength of the Eri-
trean and Somali rebels who
are supported by Egypt and
the Soviet Union and is ap-
prehensive of the possibility
of considerable portions of
Abyssinian territory being
taken away from him. The
Jerusalem question apparent-
ly served only as a pretext
for his attempt to cement
closer ties with the Vatican
and other Christians. Anu-
meri has other reasons; he
fears the strengthening So-
viet influence south of Sudan.

front in the western world.
Least of all does it desire to
face the Vatican and the
Catholic Church with its

Brickley Talk

hundreds of millions of ad-
herents. Its efforts in the past
six years are sufficient
proof of this. If, however,
we remain oblivious of these
tactics, it will be tantamount
to an ostrich policy, because
those factors in the Vatican
are stepping up their activi-
ties in the apparent belief
that Israel's status is in-
creasingly losing ground.
They should be put in their
place. It should be made clear
to them that Israel can make
retort, particularly on the
anti-Semitic plane, overt and
covert, a fact to \which the
Vatican is Very sensitive.
For example: the apolo-
getic tone adopted by the Va-
tican. towards the murderous
activities of the terrorist or-
ganizations before and after
Munich, the statements ap-
pearing in official Jesuit
Church publications, includ-
ing the last issue of "Cevi-
lita -Catholica". The public
denouncement of such factors
in Europe and the United
States might very well serve
as a first step to curbing
their activities because they
appear to be deeply hurt
when one uncovers their ',rue
image and their traditional
hatred for Jews and for Is-
rael.
