COMMUNAL TRENDS: Is the Jewish population in the
United
States increasing or declining? For some unknown
JERUSALEM ( J T A ) —
Some 54,000 immigrants will reason — maybe because the number of Jewish births
have arrived in Israel by the has fallen in the last few years — the prevailing opinion
end of the year, slightly less is, that the Jewish population in this country has stopped
than the 56,000 that arrived growing. This is not so. A look into the American Jewish
Yearbook for the last years shows that the number of
last year.
Jews is now about a quarter of a million larger than five
years ago. In 1968, the estimate was that there are 5,869,000
Jews in the U.S. and in 1971 the estimate exceeded 6,060,000.
Today there are approximately 6,115,000 Jews in this coun-
try — the largest figure in American Jewish history.
There is, however, a marked difference in the per-
centage which the Jews constituted within the total popu-
lation a few years ago and the percentage they constitute
today. While at one time the Jews were close to 4 per cent
of the entire population, today they are less than 3 per cent. •
This is due primarily to the fact that the population in
has grown in a proportion larger than the Jews.

population in this country is not its alleged decrease but
Post Time 8 P.M. • 10 RACES NIGHTLY its present composition. As years proceed, the number of
Jews over 65 years of age is constantly growing because of
increased longevity. At the same time the number of
younger Jews — except children till the age of 4 and
middle-aged persons from 30-64 — is going down. According
to the national Jewish population study of the Council of
Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, this trend will
continue for about 20 years.
Today, Jews of 65 and over constitute 12 per cent of
the total Jewish population, which means that one out of nine
Jews is over 65 years old. In 20 years from now — the
CJFWF study estimates — there will be one out of six
Jews in that age category.
On the other hand, the same study predicts that Jews
between 30-64 years of age — who now are 42 per cent of
the total Jewish population — will constitute more than 46
per cent 20 years from now. A sharp reduction of more

than 6 per cent will at the same time be noticed among
Jews in the 19-29 bracket, and a reduction of about 3
per cent will be felt among youngsters aged 5-14.

that this group requires a broad range of services.

THE RELIGIOUS FRONT: Much speculation has been
going on for years on the status of religion within the
Jewish population. Exaggerated claims on synagogue affilia-
tion has been made by all three branches of the Jewish
religious movement in this country — the Reform, Con-
CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, SERVICE GROUPS,
servative and Orthodox. A clear picture on congregational
