Effectiveness of Religious School
Training Measured in Lansing Study

A two-stage evaluation pro-
cedure developed and used
by the religious school of
East Lansing's Cong. Kehillat
Israel is described in an
article in the November-
December, issue of "Relig-'
ious Education," publication
of the Religious Education
Association of the United
States and Canada.
Portions of the study have
been adapted for use by the
Metropolitan Chicago Board
of Jewish Education.
The goal of the study was
to assess whether the objec-
tives of Kehillat Israel's
school were, in fact, being
met. Two major questions
were addressed: (1) Were
the children learning what
the teachers were teaching,
and (2) Was the congrega-
tion's religious education pro-
gram effecting any change
in the students' interests and
attitudes outside of class?
The study was conducted
by Annette Weinshank, edu-
cation director of the school,
and Lee Shulman, school
board chairman.
The procedure followed for
Part 1 was to tape record,
independently, the children's
answers to the question
"What do you remember
having learned since Septem-
ber?"
The results indicated "that
for children from grades
kindergarten-five those por-

tions of the program which
involved the children physi-
cally and artistically or
which were enhanced by
visual cues were recalled
fully and spontaneously. For
children in grades six-eight
visual cues were not as nec-
essary for successful spon-
taneous recall of material."
The procedure for Part 2
was to send parents a ques-
tionnaire designed to meas-
ure how the children felt and
what they said about the re-
ligious school program.
The survey showed that
children attending the con-
gregation's religious school
"not only show no resistance

to attending religious school

this matter."
Equally important was the
survey finding "that virtually
all of the children in the
sample to some extent ver-
bally express pride and feel-
ings of self-worth related to
their Jewishness . . . The
children were inclined to
attend religious school be-
cause the learning environ-
ment was such that it pro-
moted just those feelings of
shared Jewish experience
which are missing for our
children in the larger com-
munity."

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Friday, January 11, 1974-21

Dave & Lottie Tanzman

A local clothier has sent
his tangible thanks to the
young men of Israel's armed
forces whose bravery helped
save the nation.
The Louis Levinsons of
Radom Tailors and Clothiers
in Oak Park shipped 40 jac-
kets and pairs of trousers
for distribution to wounded
veterans being discharged
from hospitals in Israel.
The clothing was sent to
former Detroiters Dr. and
Mrs. Charles Levi, who now
live in Israel. Dr. Levi dis-
tributed the gifts directly to
soldiers in the hospitals as a
volunteer with the Soldiers'
Welfare Fund.
Levinson suggested to oth-
er small merchants in the
area to send similar gifts to
wounded soldiers in a ges-
ture of caring.
Dr. and Mrs. Myron H.
Joyrich of Rosemond Dr.,
Franklin, have on their own
sent three shipments of ther-
mal underwear, clothing and
recreational materials such
as cards and games to sol-
diers in the cold Golan
Heights.
