Canadian Gives Israel Museum 200 Hasmonean Coins . , Two hundred different 2,000-year-old Hasmonean coins were put at the Israel museum in Jerusalem by a Canadian collector, Hyman Bessin. Many unique pieces, many variants, and a coin of lead are in the collection, which was in the hands of a Jerusalem stamp collector. They were coined in Jerusalem during the reign of four Hasmonean kings who ruled between 103 BCE and 37 'BCE. Bessin previously gave the museum the earliest known Jewish coin. The 200 Hasmonean coins are here on loan. Israel Rabbis' Dispute Politically Framed By MOSHE RON Jewish News Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — There are some extremist rabbis and religious political leaders in Israel who do not take into account the complicated po- litical situation in Israel and the danger of a new war against Arab neighbors. They have this time chosen to attack the popular Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren. They had political aims on the eve of the Knesset elections. These extreme elements were behind the new verdict of the rabbinical court in Petah Tikva that Bolek (Abraham) Borokovsky is, in fact, a Jew, disregarding the fact that another rabbinical court, with the approval of Chief Rabbi Goren, had formerly declared him to be a goy. Borokovsky had launched an appeal against this verdict and the judgement of the Petah Tikva rabbinical court again stirred up the delicate case of the "two bastards", the brother and sister Lan- ger, who have in the mean- time married, with religious ceremonies, and already have children. Chief Rabbi Goren and his court had found the brother and sister to be Jewish and allowed them to marry, stating that Abraham . Borokowsky ..was not a Jew. The rabbinical court in Petah T i k v a stated, how- ever, that Borokovsky's con- version was according to law and therefore the Langer brother and sister, whose father was their mother's second husband, are again THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS bastards and their marriages 14—Friday, January 11, 1974 are not legal. A fight has broken out be- tween Jewish leaders in Greece and the Bonn govern-, ment over compensation for`' Nazi looting during the War. The Jews in Salonika, in northern Greece, say Bonn is falling heir to millions of marks unclaimed because of the deaths of those entitled to them, nor are West Ger- man bureaucrats recogniz- ing their claims for compen- sation for plundered homes and warehouses, they say. At the outbreak of the war, the JeWish community in Salonika totalled 56,800. When it ended, they num- bered fewer than 2,000. The rest had died in Nazi con- centration camps. When Bonn, in 1957 passed compensation laws covering Nazi victims in oc- cupied countries, 1,300 Salo- nika Jews pressed their claims. The West German Finance Ministry replied that, under the law, it re- quired positive proof that property had been confis- cated. Someone in 1965 found an order signed by Adolf Eichmann in 1943 that Jew- ish gold and jewelry was to be shipped from Greece to Berlin. Four years later, Bonn agreed to pay the Salo- nika Jews 10 per cent of For generations, Salonika's Jews had dominated Mace- donian trade, industry and society. They were rich and lived in luxury. After the latest verdict, one of the Mafdal leaders told me that it was his party'S fault that Rabbi Yit- zhak Nissim had not been re-elected Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel. Some Mafdal leaders supported the can- didature of Rabbi Ovadia Josef at the last minute. Chief Rabbi Goren reacted sharply on the verdict of the Petah Tikva Rabbinical Court and stated there is no value to this verdict. It is not according to the law and does not affect the former verdict of the rabbinical court on the question of the bastards. The Petach Tikva court was not authorized to deal with the Borokovsky case after the previous ver- dict. None of those concerned with this case live in Petah Tikva. The who matter was brought up again intentional- ly in the election campaign between the religious, and non-religious parties in order to put obstacles in the way of Mafdal to prevent them from joining again in a coalition government - with Maarakh. Greek Jews Ask. Bonn Payment WASHINGTON—The Amer- ican Jewish Congress urged the U. S. Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional the use of a race as a criterion in university admissions even for the purpose of increasing the number of minority stu- dents. At the same time, the AJC asserted in a friend-of-the- court brief that poverty and cultural disadvantage were proper considerations in ad- mission procedures and that a candidate's family, eco- nomic and extra-curricular background "may constitu- tionally and legitimately be considered by the school" in weighing such traditional fac- tors as prior academic rec- ord and aptitude test scores. Such considerations, the AJC said, "not only provide a method of interpreting the numerical scores but also re- veal the presence of addi- tional qaulities which are predictive of potential for success in school, in the pro- fessions and as a contributor to society at large." In another major argument, the AJC brief challenged a law school's contention, up- held by a lower court, that it could use race as an admis- sion criterion because there was a "compelling" state in- terest in alleviating a "short- age of minority attorneys," The brief was filed in De- Funis vs. Odegaard, a land- mark case that is expected to produce a filling by the Su- preme Court on the issue of racially preferential treat- ment in university admis- sions. In its brief amicus, the American Jewish Congress urged the court to rule that this procedure violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and was therefore unconstitutional. "The fact is that many whites suffer economic and cultural deprivation; many are psychologically blighted by poverty; many have at- tended inadequate schools; and many-must work while in school to support themselves and their families. "Conversely, many appli- cants from minority races come from middle - class homes and good schools."
