Israeli Ed ucators Told to Gear for New Values in War's Wake By REUVEN ROSENFELDER (Copyright 1974, JTA, Inc.) JERUSALEM — Yitzhak Shapira, principal of the Reali School and one of the most respected figures in Is- raeli education, believes the HARRY THOMAS Fine ClothevFor Over 36 Years 24750 TELEGRAPH At 10 Mile Next to Dunkin' Donuts Open Daily to 6, Thursday to 8 SUNDAY 1 1 to 4 . war is a turning point in which educators must play a major role. It is up to them to impart to students a set of values that would have to sustain them in years to come. "Our self-image as a conquering nation has been shattered," he says. "The war has shown that we are fighting with our back to the wall—and so it will be for a long, long time. Our youth must be made aware of this. "The key lies in building ATTENTION! "If we are staying here in spite of the dangers, it is because we are carrying out our historical tradition and values." Consequently, the study of Zionism and Jewish history, which was never a very strong element in Israeli ed- ucation, must be intensified. This is one of the firm les- sons of the war. It must pro- vide' the answers as to why the Jews have struggled to establish a state in this part of the world. And, in fact, a stronger Jewish conscious- ness is already apparent among young Israelis. Said one high-school senior: "Up to now, Israeli history was grasped by us as 25 years of the state, and may- be 50 years of settlement in Palestine. Now we think in much broader terms. This was is not only the fourth or fifth war of the state, but the 100th or so in 3,000 years of Jewish history." Three or four lecturers in widely divergent fields spend several days at the Egyptian front appearing before sold- iers in the field. The subjects vary from law, to philosophy, chemistry and Talmud. Prof. Arnold Enker of the law fac- ulty lectured on crimes of passion to soldiers at the abandoned gambling casino of the city of Suez, only 100 yards from the front lines. An accredited course at the front lines began two weeks before the official opening of t h e country's universities, when a lecturer in Talmud managed to loCate 10 Bar-Ilan students in his own battalion and began giving them an intensive course in talmudic literature, wit h university approval. At the university campus itself, 70 per cent of the reg- ular student body of 6,700 students showed up when studies began at the end of December. * * Special Science Talk MENS SUITS AND SPORT COATS Up to which had no appeal for self- assured Israelis will prob- ably be seen in a new per- spective. One teacher put it this way in the meeting: "We don't need new values. Ra- ther, we must bring out ele- ments which have existed in our tradition all along. For example, I'm teaching to iuy students about passive hero- ism and martyrdom, and not only active heroism." The issue is to prepare stu- dents to face hardship. Ga- briel Knoller, coordinator of the upper classes at the Reali School, is convinced that the armed struggle between Is- rael and her neighbors will continue. "If this is so," he says, "our students must be emotionally prepared for it." RINCETO 7 Mile and Evergreen 'KE 3-4310 — Detroit Old Orchard Shopping Plaza KW* at Orchard Lake Rds.
