persuaded a group of Aus-
trian Jews, consisting of 17
men, 6 women and 4 chil-
dren, to join his expedition.
He bought a yacht, dubbed
it "Israel" in honor of the
mission, and reached Suez on
Dec. 1, 1893.
In Suez, 18 members de-
serted the expedition due to
the irrational disciplinary
measures of a Prussian of-
ficer who was in command.
One of the members was later
found dead on the Sinai des-
ert, and Friedmann was
blamed for his "murder."
Leaving the women and
children in Cairo, the group
finally reached the Sinai
Peninsula and prepared to
cross the Red Sea to Midian
at Sharm el-Sheikh.
Friedmann's selection of
this site was ideal for this
19th Century crossing of the
Red Sea, for between the
Sinai coast at this point and
the opposite shore lies Tiran
Island where a community
of Jewish merchants existed
in the 5th Century. Further
on is Sinafar Island.
Because of the shelter pro-
vided by these two small is-
lands, the navigational risks
to small boats were negli-
gible. For today's large
ocean-going vessels, however,
this is a dangerous spot. The
islands and the numerous
coral reefs leave a deep wa-
ter passage just 700, to 900
feet wide.
Friedmann's expedition was
just getting under way when
word reached the group that
the Turks had taken over the
Midionite city of Dhaba, and
in accordance with Turkish
law, non-Muslims were pro-
halted from settling there.
Attempts to overrule Tur-
kish doctrine were deemed
f u t i 1 e, and Friedmann's
group dispersed. The dis-
heartened pioneers spread
gruesome tales of the doomed
enterprise. The expedition
was soon branded as a Brit-
ish plot to occupy Midian and
this led to heated controver-
sies between British and
Turkish authorities. Fried-
mann ultimately died a
broken man, financially and
spiritually.

Jobert May Visit
Israel This Year

PARIS (JTA) — French
Foreign Minister Michel Jo-
bert has let it be known to
the National Assembly and
other governmental circles
that he would like to visit
Israel early this year, the
French newspaper, "Le
Monde," reports.
If Jobert's visit to Israel
takes place, it will be the
first time a French minister
will make an official visit to
Israel since the founding of
the Fifth Republic.
Even during the Fourth
Republic, when Franco-Is-
raeli relations were excellent,
no such official visit was
made.
Conversely, neither has
Paris received officially any
Israeli government repre-
sentative. The apparent ob-
stacle to these visits is
France's refusal to recognize
Jerusalem as the capital of
Israel. In contrast, official
visits between France and
the Arab nations are con-
sistent and numerous.
Jobert's projected trip, it
is said, would not be limited
to Israel.
