Six Chilean Jews in Britain Seek Asylum

LONDON (JTA) — Six of
the seven Chilean students
seeking asylum in England
are Jewish, it was stated
here by Stanley Clinton Dav-
is, a Labor member of Par-
liament and himself Jewish.
The plight of the students re-
ceived worldwide attention
after Britain's Home Secre-
tary Robert Carr refused
them political asylum last
week.

Just

Friends

While ,their Jewishness has
no direct bearing on the case
the six have claimed that they
would face anti-Semitic and
political persecution were
they forced to return to
Chile. One of them claimed
that the ruling junta is trying
to please the Arab minority
in Chile at the expense of the
Jewish minority.
The six JeWs were dienti-
fied as: Herman Goldstein,
his wife, Tonka Mimica;
Luis Neuhauser, his wife,
Sonia Tagele; Gergorio Mel-
nick and Luis Kaffman.
The issue of political asy-
lum for the seven students
has not yet been decided.

They have exercised their
right to appeal to the immi-
gration tribunal which can
overrule the home secretary
if it sees fit. Davis took part
in a deputation to Carr after
he announced his refusal to
grant the students political
asylum.

Italy thus remains in the

It was a blow to Italy
which. at the beginning of

proclaimed a stance of

Arabs and Israelis and which

Rome also pointed out to
the Arab governments that
it had ordered refineries in
Italy to halt supplies of fuel

NEW YORK — Do you
know how it feels to have
everyone against you? At
least one African UN dele-
gate is finding out.
Medoune Fall, Senegal's
chief delegate to the UN,
said that he and his mission
have been targets of "various
hostile acts" by the people
'n New York, notably the
police.
all tobi a UN committee
last week that a policeman
had ordered a crowded gas
station not to fuel his car
and said: "African countries
should go to the Arab coun-
tries to get their gas." (Sfte-
gal is backing the Arabs
against Israel.)
In a letter issued as an
official document of the
General Assembly, Fall as-
serted that whenever he re-
turned home, a policeman
gave him a parking ticket
even if his chauffeur stopped
just long enough for him to
get out of the car.
all addedF that a lawyer
had tried to prevent the en-
voy from parking near his
office "on grounds that he
(the lawyer) was a taxpayer
and could not allow non-
taxpayers to use the facili-
ties provided to the public."
The U. S. misssion said it
was investigating the com-
plaints.
