Neiv Methods
Detect Drugs
and Explosives

REHOVOT — New tech-
niques for the detection of
drugs and explosives are be-
ing developed at the Weiz-
mann Institute of Science by
Dr. Jehuda Yinon of the in-
stitute's isotope research de-
partment, in a research proj-
ect financed by a grant of
IL 650,000, the largest sum
ever allocated by the Israel
Police for research.
Dr. Yinon's method is
based on a technique called
chemical ionization - mass
spectrometry, which he stu-
died during his recent two-
year stay at the jet propul-
sion laboratories of the Cali-
fornia Institute of Technol-
ogy in Pasadena, Calif.
This technique involves the
introduction of large quanti-
ties of gas (methane or iso-
butane) into the ionization
chamber of the mass spec-
trometer, thus strengthening
the "signals" received when
the instrument detects the
presence of drugs or explo-
sives in a compound under
analysis.

Dr. Yinon is working in
close cooperation with assist-
head of the criminal identifi-
cation department of the Is-
raeli Police, and with police
chemist Shmuel Zitrin.
Dr. Yinon said the main

problem of the police is to
determine the exact compo-
sition of drugs or explosives,
even if only small quantities
are present. This might be
the case, for example, when
There were traces of an ex-
plosive left after an act of
sabotage or if the police
were • attempting to check
for the presence of drugs in
a single drop of blood or
urine.
