Each individual or family who applies for assistance would be obliged to commit themselves for a specified number of years. The loan or grant could be used by the immigrant to purchase a flat or to buy what he needs to establish a household in Is- rael. The amount granted would depend on need, financial sta- tus, age, family size and the current economic realities in Israel. This kind of plan would help the American avoid the Israeli bureaucracy (which is frequently frustrating and unhelpful) and would lessen the feeling of many Ameri- can olim that everything is being done to absorb immi- grants from other lands, but scant attention is paid to Americans. This plan would also help Detroiters Listed as 'Enemies' If, as the saying goes, you can judge a man by his enemies, some local residents feel they're looking pretty good right now. Detroit financier Harold Berry, his stepmother, Mrs. Louis (Vivian) Berry, and investment firm head A. Al- fred Taubman are among the 575 persons included in a second White House "enemies" list made public this week. The list was com- piled by former White House aide John W. Dean III, who had suggested those on the list be given special scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service because of their ac- tivities on behalf of Sen. George McGovern in the last presidential election. Although none cited any harassment, Berry told a Detroit News reporter he felt ear from embarrassed and, in fact, was "flattered." Vivian Berry told the re- porter that she did little to deserve the "distinction," but simply contributed to the McGovern campaign and put bumper stickers on her car. She said she merely was exercising her "right as a citizen to express my prefer- ence in the presidential cam- paign. That right is one of the things I love about this country." :Abe Cherow, Says: • • • • • • • •• • • • Cantors Aid Israel andre f the i/air piace or people who appreciate NEW YORK (JTA) — The New York Cantors Concert Ensemble announced it will volunteer its services to per- form at any major fund-rais- ing or solidarity gathering on behalf of Israel. dispel the Israeli's miscon- ception that aid for the im- migrant comes out of Israeli pockets.
