Kollek Has Big Plans for Jerusalem term is the Peaceful Dwell- ings complex, the literal translation of Miskenot Shaa- nanim, the name given by Moses Montefiore 120 years ago to a long stone alms- house that he established, now used as an artists,' mu- sicians,' and writers' haven. All are free to take up resi- dence, gratis, for a period of inspiration and creation. The city, divided socially between the Arabs and Is- raelis, displays the relics of JERUSALEM—In spite of the Arab-Israel controversy over this city, Mayor Teddy Kollek looks ahead to more improvements in his ever- growing Jerusalem. One of these improvements is construction of a commu- nal TV aerial to replace those dotting the Old City sky. He also hopes to have an underground parking ga- rage to relieve the narrow streets of their congestion. A site developed during his In 1492 Columbus discovered America. Now it's our turn. However, there are mod- ern buildings that make up an architectural balance in the city's character. For ex- ample, there are "suburban- style" buildings and high- rise apartments that jut into the Old City skyline. Sites around the Old City walls, eyesores from the days of the British Mandate, have been cleared away and have been turned into park- ways and promenades. Kollek enjoys a new res- taurant called Peer's locat- ed near the artists' complex, owned by a Moroccan chef, whom Kollek insists cooks the only kosher haute cuisine in the world. In spite of the advances the city is still threatened politically. King Hassan II of Morocco announced a call for "next year in Jerusalem," and no Arab leader has chal- lenged that call. The Vatican, whch for years called for the internationalization of the city, has changed its view somewhat and asked that the city be ruled by foreign con- suls. That would put Kollek out of a job. U.S. Urged to Get Oil Blackmailers Where It Hurts WASHINGTON — A recent U.S. Department of Agricul- ture survey showed that Sau- di Arabia is 100 per cent de- pendent on imports for both wheat and feed grains, and even wealthier Kuwait is 100 per cent dependent on im- ported feed grains. This fact should have a bearing, says Sen. Strom Thurmond (R. S.C.), on U.S. dealings with those countries that have put an embargo on oil supplies. Thurmond introduced legis- lation last month which would require the President to prohibit the export of agricultural grain "to any nation reducing, for political purposes, the quantity of oil normally exported to the United States or nationaliz- ing any U.S. properties." A similar resolution was intro- duced in the House. Besides Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, countries that need imported foodstuffs include Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Leban- on and Syria. In many cases, the exports are shipped at reduced cost or as outright gifts. American agricultural ex- ports to the Middle East are expected to jump 50 per cent in 1973-74--totaling $300,000,- 000. In a leter to members of "Herut U. S. A." (United Zionists-Revisionists), Presi- dent Howard Adelson urged a letter-writing campaign to all U.S. senators and repre- sentatives calling on them to co-sponsor Thurmond's bill, 52604. Meanwhile, the U.S. gov- ernment is reviewing the commercial agreement it signed with Saudi Arabia in 1933 to determine whether King Faisal's oil embargo against the U.S. is violating it. However, an early decision -on the results of the review is unlikely.
