Terming the grant "a ma- jor milestone in the enhance- ment of programs of service to our fellow Jews in need," Becker said that the grant would enable the council to augment the programs of its local affiliates and to launch meaningful activities in areas not previously served. Mayor John V. Lindsay initially provided New York City resources to aid the city's estimated 272,000 Jew- ish poor with allocation of a grant of $250,000 to the coordinating council from the city's Human Resources Ad- ministration for the period Dec. 1, 19'72 Nov. 30, 1973. William L. Pierce, who runs the anti-Semitic, right- wing National Youth Alliance in Arlington, Va., is an ad- mitted friend of George Lin- coln Rockwell, the late chief of the American Nazi Party. Following Rockwell's death, Pierce became "assistant executive officer" and "ideo- logical officer." The NYA, an offshoot of the "arch-conservative Liberty Lobby, went out of business in Washington and was rein- stated in Virginia by Pierce. The organization publishes hate literature and sends out appeals for fund s. The group's publication "Attack" usually has "ghoulish pic- tures of maimed and dis- figured bodies . . . described in rabid language as Arabs who fell victim to Israeli attacks," Anderson said. The most recent issue of "Attack" has a picture of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger focused in the range of a rifle telescope, and information on the con- struction of booby-traps, ex- plosives and demolitions. This literature is published tax free. A letter from the IRS to Pierce stated that the NYA is "not liable for social security (FICA) taxes" or for "the taxes imposed under the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA)." All be- quests and gifts also are de- ductible. Pierce has since taken his tax-exempt credentials to the Postal Service where he has secured reduced rates for mailing his literature. Anderson, in a footnote, said that an IRS spokesman said that tax-exempt status is "usually granted on the presumption that 'the organ- ization has acted in good faith and has told us the `truth' about its operations.' " Tranquility is the summum bonum of old age. — Thomas Jefferson. fare and poverty programs, refunded the coordinating council a $185,362 grant for its programs from Dec. 1, 1973 to next June 30. With the new OEO grant, a total of $1,190,362 has been allocated to the coordinating council by the Lindsay ad- ministration, Becker said. go Be a Jew . . .
