Were Rome and Lod Massacres by Same Terrorist Organization? ROME (JTA) The Arab terrorists who attacked Rome's airport, killing 30 people, and later another two, may belong to the same terrorist group responsible for the massacre at Lod Air- port in May 1972. Italian Interior Minister Paolo E. Taviani told parlia- ment that the preliminary investigation showed that the group also may have been responsible for terrorist ac- Lions at airports near Zurich and Athens. He cautioned that this was speculative and not yet substantiated. The Japanese suicide squad which flew from Fiumicino Airport to Israel was believed to have received supplies in Rome. Italian security offi- cials are trying to uncover what they believe is a perma- nent Palestinian guerrilla base in Rome which includes hideaway apartments, an ar- 16—Friday, Dec. 21, 1973 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ea vssisetkiiirstassatizati 0C2C? Austrian authorities an- nounced that they would beef up police protection at Vien- na's Schwechat Airport in an- ticipation of new Arab ter- rorist attacks because Austria is still admitting Jewish emi- gres from the Soviet Union en route to Israel. The announcement coincid- ed with the terrorist outrage in Rome, when five Palestin- ian terrorists hurled incen- diary bombs into a Pan American jet, sprayed the terminal with machinegun bullets and hijacked a Luf- thansa jet which eventually landed at Athens. According to reports from Rome, most persons were burned alive aboard the fire- bombed Pan Am jet and two others were mowed down by bullets. The body of one victim was thrown out of the plane en route to Athens. The Pan Am plane was re- p o r t e d l y "devasted" by flames and the bodies of the victims charred beyond rec- ognition. The terrorists made their machinegun and firebomb at- tack after they were detected by Rome airport authorities carrying concealed weapons aboard the Beirut-bound Pan Am plane, apparently with the intention of hijacking it once in the air. But they destroyed the American plane instead and seized a nearby West German airliner, forcing at least 11 hostages to board it under gunpoint. The pilot was forced to take off and the plane landed at Athens Air- port after the hijackers were refused permission to land at Beirut. The terrorists reportedly threatened to shoot one hos- tage every 10 minutes begin- ning at 8 p.m. Athens time unless the Greek government surrendered two imprisoned terrorists. But later, that threat proved to be only a ploy. The Palestinian terrorists finally were seized Tuesday in Kuwait, where the plane landed after a Damascus re- fueling. The two imprisoned terrorists they sought to free remained in custody in Greece. The five being held in Kuwait said they were proud of what they had done. Palestinian guerrilla leader Yassir Arafat said he wants the terrorists tried by a Pal- estinian court and to be judged by them. Morocco also condemned the terrorists. The attack at Rome airport occurred three days after the opening of the trial in Rome of three Arabs arrested last Sept. 5 in an aborted plot to shoot down an El Al airliner with ground - to - air missiles concealed near the approach- es to Rome airport. Two other Arabs accused as accomplices were released on their own recognizance. The U.S. State Department related the "vicious attack" in Rome to the Arab-Israeli peace conference. "The U.S. government deplores inci- dents such as this at any time," it declared, "and par- ticularly at a time when a peaceful settlement of the Middle East question, a fac- tor apparently in the minds of the terrorists, is being sought by many peace-loving governments and individuals." "This new outrage under- lines the urgent necessity to strengthen the civil aviation security measures through- out the world," it said in a statement read to the press by department spokesman Paul Hare. Department officials who had long sought measures in the United Nations and other international forums to com- bat such terror expressed shock at the wanton killings and carnage sown by the Arab terrorists. The UN General Assembly last month postponed action to next year on its special committee's report for meas- ures regarding terrorism. "The committee was not enthusiastic to do anything," the official said. "It was di- vided with Arab or pro-Arab elements arguing that action against terrorists would de- ter national liberation move- ments."
