Q. I am a small business- man. What began as a one- man operation today has 25 employes. We do pretty well, and fortunately my son likes the business. How can I give my son the business and minimize the tax effect on my estate? A. Gift taxes are less than estate taxes and since you can decide WHEN to make the gift, there will be less disruption to your estate. Besides, you will be around to enjoy the advantages of an outright gift rather than a bequest. There is one conception about gifts of not-readily- marketable stocks which you should explore with your CPA or attorney. The Inter- nal Revenue Service will try to establish a high valuation to obtain more taxes. There- 6337 ORCHARD LAKE RD. A for it might be prudent on your part to make a compar- able gift of stock to a public charity, such as Federation- United Jewish Charities. The Internal Revenue Serv- ice tries to establish a low value for this type of a chari- table gift. You would then be able to equate the valua- tion of the two gifts for your benefit. You would be combining wise financial planning with charitable giving. You would receive an immediate chari- table deduction for the fair market value of the donated stock. The appreciation in the value of the stock would not be taxable as a capital gain. You would also be re- ducing your estate with sub- sequent reduced estate taxes. In the meantime, Federa- tion — Charities could set up a fund in your name for you to use for philanthropic pur- poses, such as your annual contribution to the Allied Jewish Campaign - Israel Emergency Fund. g3 i rt il s • TOM NEWBY of SoUthfield • • • Dec. 6—To Mr. and Mrs. • Flowers, Gifts • Sandford Kuretzky (Marilyn • • • . Before you tweeze again, remember this uotation from one of the foremost medical authorities on the subject of human hair: "Plucking out strong hairs should never be advised." Why not? Because the long term ' penalties for continued plucking can be so -. severe: 1. You may.stimulate the growth of additional hairs around the one you pull out. 2. You may cause succes- sive generations of hair from the abused follicle to grow coarser, longer, darker. 3. You may cause skin irri- tations, pits, scars. 4. You may make eventual permanent removal slower aka costlier by pulling the root and follicle out of place. Such risks are needless now that Air-cooled jet Stream Electrolysis is avail- able to you. This is the first method of permanent hair removal with everything to commend it. Air-cooled Jet Stream is faster, more com- fortable. Electrolysis is the only medically approved method to remove hair permanently. Investigate this suprior spe- cialized service for the per- manent improvement and confidence. UN 2-8914 RABBI LEO GOLDMAN tiwrt 111,111'1 ing Ila•pital , and LI 2-4444 Our middle child, not quite 3 years old, is very hostile toward his 9-month-old broth- er, to say the least! He kicks, bites, pinches, scratches him, etc., often drawing blood in the process. Spanking him does no good, nor does it really seem an adequate punishment to my husband and myself. We've tried to show him extra attention, with lots of body contact, time with him only, etc. But to no avail, or so it would seem. My husband and I are at our wit's end, not to mention the poor baby (who adores his older brother anyhow.) Please help us . . . because . . . like they say on tele- vision: —What's a Mother—and Father—to Do? Dear Mother and Father: The problems of a "middle child" are very real for him, as well as for his parents. On the one hand, there is an older brother or sister who was a first child and had the chance to have the undivided attention of his parents, and who is older and is more cap- able of doing things and be- ing more self-sufficient. A child not quite 3 years of age doesn't feel as though he has established his own position in the family. Along comes a younger brother in the family, and he feels dis- placed. It is understandable that he would resent this "in- truder," even though you may feel that the baby is lovable and even "adores" him. First of all, it is important for him to be able to express his anger—but it should not be directed physically against his younger brother who, obviously, at 9 months of age, cannot protect himself. He should not be permitted to express himself by biting or scratching his baby brother. Try to get him to talk to you about his anger and re- sentment against his baby brother. The more verbaliza- tion the better. At the same time, you might purchase some toys like punching bags or soft plastic objects, which he can hit and bang. Better to bang the toys than his younger brother. Sometimes parents, con- sciously or unconsciously, People Must Create We have come to the con- clusion that a people that aspires to a dignified exist- ence must create a culture, not only apply one but create one, create it with its own hands and its own imple- ments and materials and im- press it with its own seal.— Chaim N.
