30 Students
in U-14 Class
in Talmud Law

Bais Chabad Hasidic stu-
dent center of Farmington is
organizing a bus trip to New
York this month for college-
age men and women to parti-
cipate in the weekend "En-
counter With Chabad" (Luba-
vitch). The trip will be led
by Rabbi Yitschak M. Kagan.
The Michigan group will
include students from the
University of Michigan, Mich-
igan State University,
Thomas Jefferson College in
Grand Rapids and Wayne
State and Oakland universi-
ties. The cost of the trip in-
cludes round-trip transporta-
tion. accommodations in New
York and registration for the
encounter seminars.
One bus for the Men's En-
counter Weekend will leave
next Thursday morning and
return Dec. 24. Another bus
for the Women's Encounter
Weekend leaves Dec. 27 and
returns Dec. 31.
The "Encounter" format
has the students living with
Hasidic families for the dura ,
tion of their stay. They will
attend seminars, worship
with thousands of Hasidim in
the synagogue of the Luba-
vitcher Rebbe and join in the
"Midnight Farbrengen" Ha-
sidic gathering. This year's
Encounter theme is "Libera-
tion — Hasidic Style."
For information, call Rabbi
Yitschak Kagan, 542-5058.

A course in talmudic law,
with students paired off to
teach each other, has more
than 30 University of Michi-
gan students enrolled for its
second year.
Some 33 took the course
when it was first offered last
year, though it initially had
been planned for only 16 stu-
dents.
Taught in English, the
course is geared to the needs
of the student who does not
have a traditional Jewish
background. However, more
than half of the class mem-
bers can read the original
text.
Developed in response to
student requests, the course
was designed and is taught
by Rabbi Joel Poupko.

Source of Salvation
We must cease being
strangers and begin to live
an independent, national life
as all other peoples. The na-
tional idea, which is the
source of our troubles, can
and must become the source
of our salvation. We must
make every effort to become
a normal people again, in-
stead of being the orphans
of the world.—M. L. Lilien-
blum, "The Future of Our
People, On the Renaissance
of Israel."
