Riegle Relays
Hope for Peace
in Hanuka Note

Congressman Donald W.
Riegle Jr., in a Hanuka
message to the Jewish com-
munity from him and his
wife Meredith, expressed the
hope "that the people of Is-
rael will live in peace and
that the celebration of Ha-
nuka in 1973 will find per-
secution, oppression and anti-
Semitism words of the past;
peace and brotherhood,
words of the present; love
and respect for one another,
words of the future."

One Good Turn
Does Another

One favor turned into a
double mitzva for three young
men in Flint.
The mail to the Flint Jew-
ish Community Council office
brought the following note
from Robert J. Eder, Par-
ticular Council of Flint, So-
ciety of St. Vincent DePaul,
St. Matthew Conference:
"Mark Kukler, Dave Stan-
ley and Jeff Stanzler did a
favor for someone at St.
Matthew's, and he insisted on
paying them.
"Since the boys did not
need the money, they all de-
cided that they'd like to do-
nate it to Israel. Enclosed
is their check."

Spiritual leaders of a Cath-
olic church and a Lutheran
church in Flint have sent
letters to Kurt Waldheim,
secretary-general of the Unit-
ed Nations, urging him to in-
tervene on behalf of Israeli
prisoners of war held in
Syria.
The clergymen are Fr.
Michael P. Matarazzo of
Christ the King Catholic
Church and Rev. Gary S.
Anderson of Salem Lutheran
Church.
Fr. Matarazzo wrote that
he was "appalled by the rev-
elations of the murder of
Israeli POW s by Syrian
forces during the recent Mid-
east war.
"Continual refusal by the
Syrian government to ex
change prisoners or even
provide a list of those being
held constitutes not only a
violation of the Geneva Con-
vention, but is also a form of
callous inhumanity.

"Hundreds of parents,
wives and children are sus-

Rev. Anderson described
as "horrible" the reports of
murder and mistreatment
and withholding of names of
Israeli prisoner sby the Syr-
