The synagogue was the only one found intact, with four walls and roof, when the old Jerusalem quarter was liberated in the Six-Day War. The synagogue was established by Rabbi Menahem Mendel of Lubavitch (1785-1866), who was known as the "Tzemach Tzedek" after a voluminous responsa he authored. He was an ancestor of the present Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menahem M. Schneerson. The Rebbe contrib- uted the funds necessary for the synagogue's restoration. • I 1 ::: i ::: ... Yamani said that once there was a guaranteed ac- ceptance by Israel of total withdrawal, his country would eventually produce oil at the rate of 20,000,000 bar- rels a day, which is higher than the levels of last Sep- tember. But he said that in the fu- ture the oil-producing coun- tries — Arab and others — would determine the price of oil. Yamani declared last week that "the existence of Israel is not a question." In the lobby of the State Department after a 90-min- ute meeting with Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, Yamani told JTA: "I think so many Arab leaders have announced they are pre- prepared to recognize Israel and to sign a peace treaty, the existence of Israel is not a question. It definitely is not to be related to the oil busi- ness." He affirmed that "the goal which we are looking for— which is peace in the area— is more feasible than at any time in the past. The Israelis realize they cannot continue their occupation and cannot ignore peace." In his meeting with the press here he did not insist on any change in the U.S. position toward Israel. Congresswoman Says Kissinger Put Israel in Vulnerable Position NEW YORK (JTA)—Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman (D., N.Y.) charged Sunday that the Nixon-Kissinger "shoot- ing from the hip" diplomacy in the Middle East "might have placed Israel in a more vulnerable position than be- fore" the Yom Kippur War. Addressing the ninth bi- ennial convention of the Americans for Progressive Israel-Hashomer Hatzair at the Statler Hilton Hotel, Rep. Holtzman observed •that when the Egyptian Third Army was encircled by Israeli forces, Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger flew to Moscow to negotiate a cease fire but failed to bargain for an end to the Arab oil boy- cott. "The U.S. by its failure to bargain at that point allow- ed Israel to become isolated in the whole world with every country an enemy except the U.S.," she said. Mezuzas & Earrings `Saudi Arabia Won't Recognize Israel' WASHINGTON (JTA) — Saudi Arabia will not recog- nize Israel even if it con- cludes a peace settlement with its neighbors and with- draws to the pre-June 1967 borders, Sheikh Ahmed Ya- mani, the Saudian minister of petroleum said on the CBS "Face the Nation" tele- vision program Sunday. Yamani, replying to re- porters' questions, said that if Israel withdraws from all of the Arab territories, in- c l u d i n g East Jerusalem, under the terms of Resolu- tion 242, "what matters is that the countries that sur- round Israel" recognize it and its borders. The Saudi minister named Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria as Israel's immediate neighbors which would be required to recognize it under a peace settlement. He insisted that Israel re- turn East Jerusalem to Arab rule but was vague as to which Arabs should rule it. If there is a Palestinian state, it should have Jeru- salem, if not it should be- long to Jordan, Yamani said when pressed by reporters. •.• • ... ••- • •.• .• • ...• • ... Large Selection of
