Heinl, Addressing Yeshiva Event,
Debunks Myth That Arabs Won
Despite the growing myth
that the Arabs won the Yom
Kippur War, their military
situation at the close of the
hostilities was "catastro-
phic," according to military
analyst Col. Robert D. Heinl.

December 1970 (the first
Leningrad trial).
Pregnant when she was ar-
rested, she soon suffered a
miscarriage, and now is suf-
fering from a peptic ulcer,
malnutrition and is in danger
of becoming deaf.
She has been trying in vain
to obtain permission to leave
since 1968. In 1970, she mar-
ried Eduard Kuznetsov, also
a prisoner of conscience. He
originally was sentenced to
death in December 1970; the
death sentence was com-
muted to 15 years because
of world protests against
death sentences.

hear his replies to questions
on the Middle East situation.
The speaker pointed out
that the Syrian and Iraqi
armies were "gravely wound-
ed," that the Egyptian ax'my
was split and powerless be-
fore the Israeli thrust, that
the wide surface-to-air mis-
sile belt behind the canal
was ripped apart to make
way for the Israel air force
and that the Israeli navy put
the Egyptian and Syrian
navies to shame, with the
help of a new ship-killing
missile, the Gabriel.
"Great power intervention
alone kept Israel's swift
sword from applying its final
killing stroke," said Heinl.
If anyone is the winner,
said Heinl, it is the Russians,
who gained most of their dis-
ruptive aims. Certainly one
lesson learned, he said, is
that "Russia hasn't changed"
and that detente was viol-
lated before the ink was dry
on the pact.
Col. Heinl drew a parallel
between the Yom Kippur
War and the Spanish Civil
War, both of which "unveiled
a host of new weapons,
which, if not strict surprises,
certainly gave the war the
look of tomorrow."
He frankly described the
Arabs' goal as the destruc-
tion of Israel.
As for Israel, unlike the
Arabs, she has gained "a
more sober and realistic per-
ception of events." The war
has demonstrated that she
must keep the Golan Heights,
part of the Sinai Peninsula
and Sharm el-Sheikh, said
Heinl.
Toastmaster at the dinner
was Ernest L. Citron, chair-
man. Irwin I. Cohn led in
the grace after the meal.
Hillel L. Abrams, president
of Beth Yehudah Schools, ex-
tended greetings.
Israeli Vice Consul Shlomo
Levin will come from New
York to participate in memo-
rial services for the fallen
heroes of the Yom Kippur
War 8 p.m. Monday in the
Young Israel Center of Oak-
Woods. This observance has
been called by the Council
of Orthodox Rabbis in coop-
eration with the Jewish Com-
munity Council. Rabbi James
I. Gordon will serve as chair-
man of the evening, and
Rabbi Leizer Levin and
Hubert Sidlow will take part.
