500 Yiddish Songs
in McGraw Volume
The portrait of a people
who expressed their deepest
feelings and thoughts through
their songs, "Voices of a
People: The Story of Yiddish
Folksong" by Ruth Rubin
(McGraw-Hill), illuminates
every aspect of the now van-
ished life of the Eastern
European Jewish community.
Containing the texts of
some 500 songs in trans-
literated Yiddish and Eng-
lish, this panorama of Jew-
ish life is concerned with the
youngest offspring of Jewish
folk music and one of the
richest stores of popular
music in modern times. For
this second edition, a new
final chapter on the universal
language of folksong, and a
musical appendix containing
the scores for 54 songs dis-
cussed in the text have been
added to the popular book.
The days I spent in Israel last month were the longest
. . . and the shortest . . . I have ever known. Long because
the intensity and impact of war made me wish for a new,
peaceful, fresh tomorrow. Short because there was not
enough time to absorb what we saw nor to talk with
enough people.
This is Sofia, who is three.
She and her parents came from Russia
to Israel in early October.
Her father volunteered immedi-
ately upon their arrival to work har-
vesting crops while the kibbutz workers
were mobilized.
He said, "For years I needed Israel:
now she needs me. -
