Herman Liberman,
`Pedestrian Tourist'

NEW YORK — Herman
N. Liberman Jr., who recent-
ly completed a walking tour
of Manhattan, died Nov. 26
at age 62. Mr. Liberman,
who began his tour in 1966,
photographed every house of
worship along Manhattan's
502 miles of streets, result-
ing in a total of 889 pictures.
Mr. Liberman was a mem-
ber of the New York Stock
Exchange since 1931. He also
was a trustee and past presi-
dent of the board of directors
of Grand Street Settlement,
which provides cultural and
recreational activities f o r
children and adults on the
Lower East Side.

Manes Hecht,
Pediatrician

Dr. Manes S. Hecht, a
pediatrician with offices at
26711 Woodward, Huntington
Woods, died Nov. 21 at age
66.
Dr. Hecht, 26550 Hendrie,
Huntington Woods, was born
in Baltimore and lived 28
years in Detroit. He was
graduated from John Hop-
kins University's school of
medicine and was a prac-
ticing physician for 40 years.
He was a past president of
the Detroit Pediatric Society,
head of the Rheumatic Fever
Clinic at Children's Hospital
and a World War II medical
corps captain. He was a
board member of the Cham-
ber Music Society and a
member of Temple Beth El.
He leaves his wife, Mar-
jorie; and three daughters,
Mrs. David (Betsy) Summer,
Miriam and Deborah.

Samuel Leavitt,
Store Founder

Samuel P. Leavitt, an in-
dependent supermarket pio-
neer who was in the produce
business for 43 years, died
Nov. 22 at age 79.
Mr. Leavitt, 15146 James,
Oak Park, was born in New
York City and lived 62 years
in Detroit. He began his in-
dependent supermarkets in
1920 with the Michigan-Gil-
bert Supermarket, 6401 Mich-
igan, which he maintained
for nine years. In 1929 he
founded the Leavitt Quality
Market at Mack and Marl-
boro Ayes. and later the E
and L Market at Dix and
Southfield Rds. and the Mill_
tary Market in Port Huron.
For the past 10 years, Mr.
Leavitt was a licensed real
estate broker with American
Custom Homes. He was a
member of Temple Beth El
for more than 45 years,
Pisgah Lodge_ of Bnai Brith
and Grand Street Boys of
New York.
He leaves his wife, Helen;
a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude
H. Evans; a brother, Ben-
jamin; two sisters, Mrs. Jack
(Freda) Levitsky and Mrs.
Jim (Sadie) James; four
grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.

Simeon Cugell,
Attorney, 90

Simeon Cugell, a retired
attorney who was a member
of the Michigan Bar Asso-
ciation since 1910, died Tues-
day at age 90.
Mr. Cugell, 16369 Melrose,
Southfield was born in New
Haven, Conn. and lived 63
years in Detroit. He was
graduated from Yale Univer-
sity and the University of
Detroit law school. He was a
member of Temple Beth El.
He leaves two daughters,
Mrs. Charles (Billie) Nagler
and Mrs. Herbert (Frances)
Philipp; two sisters, Mrs.
Samuel (Bess) Persky and
Mrs. Harris (Anne) Rosen-
baum, both of Connecticut;
and two grandchildren.
