Raoul Wallenberg's Mother
Notes Concern for Son's
Status in Fleming Letter

A deeply moving factor
emerges from the tributes
that are being paid to Raoul
Gustav Wallenberg, the Swe-
dish Christian hero of World
War II who helped rescue
tens of thousands of Jews in
Hungary during the Nazi
regime. In his honor, the
University of Michigan Col-
lege of Architecture and De-
sign has established an an-
nual lecture series.
Raoul's mother, Mrs. Maj.
von Dardel, who resides in
Djursholm, Sweden, insists
that her son is still alive,
that he is a prisoner of the
Russians.
Acknowledging a message
from Dr. Robben Fleming,
president of the University
of Michigan, who had writ-
ten her about the tributes to
her son by the U. of M. Col-
lege of Architecture and De-
sign, Mrs. Dardel wrote.
"What can I do to help my
son? It seems to me that I
have tried everything. But
there is the Soviet lie that
`Wallenberg died in the
Ljubljank prison in July
1947. But a Hungarian liv-

1966 in Budapest that Raoul
Wallenberg was in Siberia;
and Prof. Nanna Swartz
heard in Moscow that a col-
league, Prof. Myaanikov, said
that Raoul is in a mental
hospital in Russia.
Mrs. Dardel also stated in
her letter: "I have written to
Mr. Kissinger for help but
without an answer."
Referring to the Yom Kip-
pur War, having written her
letter when it was already
in its tragic development,
Mrs. Dardel added: "Since
this war has broken out, I
can't ask the great Jewish
organizations for help mom-
entarily." It is part of her
anguish and her hope that
her son may yet be rescued
from Soviet persecutions.
Addressing herself to U-M
President F 1 e m in g, Mrs.
Dardel concluded: "May I
regard you as a friend of my
son."
