demonstration of the "extra
soul" which the Almighty
gives to each Jew on the
Sabbath. An extra soul should
bring additional delight.
While it is forbidden to fast
on the Sabbath, we do fast if
Yom Kippur falls on the
Sabbath and we fast for a
bad dream on the Sabbath.
B'asically, the answer to
this situation is to be found
in understanding that there
are two differen motivations
for fasting. Sometimes fast-
ing serves as an expression
of one's troubled mind be-
cause of tragedies that may
have befallen a person. In-
deed, there are certain fast
days in the Jewish calendar
which commemorate tragic
events in Jewish history.
Such fasting is certainly pro-
hibited on the Sabbath since
one should consider himself
at peace with contentment on
the Sabbath. There are, how-
ever, other fasts which bring
peace of mind. These are
fasts which express peni-
tence and the purification of
the soul like the fast on Yom
Kippur. Such a fast is not
incongruous with the purpose
of the Sabbath. Also, fasting
after a bad dream is a means
of bringing peace to a trou-
