Detective Stories, Palindromes, Anagrams, Epitaphs Published Palindromes are sentences that read the same—back- wards and forwards. Some famous examples from Ho- ward W. Bergerson's "Palin- dromes and Anagrams," is- sued as a Dover paperback, follow: —A man, a plan, a canal, Panama. —Dennis and Edna sinned. —Red rum, sir, is murder. —Live not on evil, madam, live not on evil. —Able was I ere I saw Elba. '7as it a rat I saw? _Jo lemons, no melon. —Lepers repel. —Sums are not set as a test on Erasmus. And anagram's, a popular literary form throughout his- tory, are re-arrangements of the letters of a word (or words): —Desperation. A rope ends it. —Is pity love? Positively! —The nudist colony. No un- tidy clothes. —Sedimentary. Many see dirt. — Moonlight. Thin Gloom. —Admirer. Married. —Gold and Silver. Grand old evils. —The lost paradise. Earth's ideal spot. —Maple sugar. Real sap gum. Linguists, searchers for word meanings, those who are certain to be fascinated by many of the palindromes in this interesting book will be especially intrigued by this one: Are we not drawn on- wards, we Jews, drawn on- ward to new era? Now read it back and have fun! And there are these: Harass sensuousness, Sarah. Norah's foes order red rose of Sharon. "Palindromes a n d Ana- grams" contains more than 1,100 different anagrams and nearly as many palindromes —in short sentences, poetry, a short story, playlet, even suggestions from a palin- dromic opera, plus such oth- er literary games as chara- des, circular reversals, voca- bularyclepts, word-unit palin- dromes and more. Here are the works of the finest historical and contem- porary palindromists and anagrarnmatists — including J. A. Lindon, George Mar- vill, Graham Reynolds, Erik Bodin, Leigh Mercer, Dmitri Borgmann, John Wardroper, Dr. A. Ross Eckler and Howard Bergerson. * * "Tools and Their Uses," originally prepared for the use of U.S. naval personnel, is now available as a Dover paperback. In Berchen's "M a i n e" there is the combination of artistic skill with splendid narrative. Not only lovers of the state of Maine but all who are interested in the best in America will be delighted by this book. * * * American Epitaphs Dover Publications issued a most interesting collection of "American Epitaphs — Grave and Humorous." Gathered under a variety of chapter titles by Charles I. Wallis, this volume pro- vides entertainment. Amidst many laughs there is also historical value to this work because of the many emi- nent Americans represented epitaphically. There is, among the less notable, this one from the Emerson, N. J., Cedar Park Cemetery: Charlotte Stern Born Nov. 19, 1869 in Ger- many. Died Feb. 23, 1939 on board ship bringing her to the Land of Liberty and buried in these United States. March 5, 1939 While much in the book is hilarious, a great deal re- flects upon historic experi- ences, love of country, dedi- cation to service. * * Popular Detective Tales THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, Nov. 23, 1973-2S Film on David Ben-Gurion, Is Found Wanting By DAVID FRIEDMAN JTA Staff Writer (Copyright 1573, JTA, Inc.) NEW YORK — It was pure coincidence that the Israeli- made film, "Ben-Gurion Re- members," opened here in three theaters when Israel was at war again. Although timed to coincide with Ben- Gurion's 87th birthday, the film takes added meaning now as the life of the man who, As Israel's prime min- Tekoah Recovering From Pneumonia NEW YORK (JTA)—Yosef Tekoah, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, was reported Tuesday to be in "good condition" by a spokesman for Mt. Sinai Hos- pital, where' the envoy has been for the past two weeks. A spokesman for the Israel Mission to the UN said that Tekoah had been suffering from viral pneumonia. He said he could not make the disclosure earlier because he had been under instructions nat to reveal Tekoah's ill- ness. Tekoah was taken to the hospital Nev. 5 after ad- dressing a rally in the city's Garment District on Israeli prisoners of war. ister, was dedicated to the policy that the Jewish people will never suffer a Holocaust again. It is unfortunate that this film — written by Michael Bar Zohar, a well-known Is- raeli journalist and former press officer for Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and the film's producer-director, Simon Hesera—is not better. For those who have only a limited knowledge of Ben- Gurion or Israel the film offers a good, although super ficial history of the pre-state Yishuv and Israel's first 25 years. as those showing Ben-Gurion revisiting the various places of his life. There was a good segment with Ben-Gurion commenting on world leaders he met in- cluding American presidents. He is shown with a young Richard Nixon, then vice president. Finally Ben-Gurion pre- dicts that peace will come to the Middle East when the Arabs realize they need it as much as Israel.
