U.S. Warned of Loss of Middle East Status,
Soviets' Assumption of Control of 011 Taps

In his syndicated column
Tuesday, Joseph Alsop
warned of an impending
threat to U.S. interests in the
Middle East by a Russian
takeover, unless there is a
settlement, with time for the
U.S. to avert Soviet control.
"This game's stake is con-
trol of the oil tap which is
now the jugular of the West-
ern world," Alsop wrote. "If
there is a settlement, the
U.S. may have time to avert
Soviet control of the oil tap

Dayan to Address UJA Annual

NEW YORK—Israeli Min-
ister of Defense Moshe
Dayan will be the keynote
speaker at the Dec. 8 ban-
quet of the 1974 annual na-
tional conference of the
United Jewish Appeal, Paul
Zuckerman, UJA general
chairman, announced.
"Normally, our national
conference is held to launch
the coming year's Israel
Emergency Fund and na-
tional UJA c a m paig n,"
Zuckerman explained, "but
this year the Dec. 7-8 con-
ference is a target date for
the completion of 1974 fund-
raising efforts which be-
gan shortly after the out-
break of the Yom Kippur
War. The format of this con-
ference has been revised to
focus on the emergency con-
ditions in Israel."
This year's conference will
initiate, as a yearly event,
the Louis A. Pincus Memo-
rial Lecture. The 1974 lec-
ture, on the theme "Yom
Kippur 1973," will be de-

WASHINGTON, D. C.—The
Jewish War Veterans of the
U.S.A. has proposed "strong;
counter-measures" to pre-
vent the free world from
being held "for ransom by
King Faisal and a handful
of assorted sheikhs."
"If we do not have the
courage to resist them now,
then we hold future genera-
tions for ransom," said the
JWV.
"Let them make the choice
between the Communist and
free worlds. See how fast the
sheikhs would run to us if
we resisted them and brought
them to Brezhnev's door."
Among the suggestions for
counter-measures are:
Immediate stoppage of all
energy
wastefulness,
im-
mediate and - massive re-
search and development of
alternate energy
sources,
and development of existing
oil fields within the U. S.,
Alaska and offshore; reduc-
tion of NATO commitments
to Western Europe in terms
of stationary troop strength
and material inventories;
and a total commitment to
economic counter-measures,
including a cessation of
trade and all technical as-
sistance to Arab countries.

To Be a Jew . . .
To be a Jew . . . is to be
strong with the strength that
h a s outlived persecutions.
—Phyllis Bottome, in "The
Mortal Storm."

titled "And None Shall Make
Them Afraid," will memo-
rialize those lost in Israel's
most recent struggle for sur-
vival. Produced by play-
wright Murray Schisgal, the
program will feature Misha
Alexandrovich, Herschel Ber-
nardi, Theodore Bikel, Lee
J. Cobb, Bel Kaufman, Can-
tor David Kusevitsky and the
Inbal Dancers.

Israel is likely to he humbled
and at least half-crushed. Yet
if this horrible result is avoid-
ed, no more than a couple of
years will be gained for the
U.S. to gather its wits again
and to restore its lost stand-
ing as giant power by re-
armament and in other ways.
"The reasons for this bleak
outlook are bleakly simple.
The best imaginable settle-
ment Secretary Kissinger can
negotiate will eventually in-
volve Israeli withdrawal
from most of a demilitarized
Sinai, plus subsequent re-
opening of the Suez Canal.
This best settlement will,
therefore, permit the Soviets
to pose as the Arabs' re-
vengers and to pour their
ever-growing naval power in-
to the Red Sea, the Indian
Ocean and the Persian Gulf.
For this, the Kremlin needs
the canal reopened."
