Jackson Appeals Again for Aid to Israel to Provide for Security

As one of the 70 senators
who are cosponsoring S. Res.
189, which calls upon the
President to furnish military
assistance to Israel, Senator
Henry M. Jackson addressed
the U. S. Senate subcommit-
tee on foreign operations and
stated in part:
"The funds requested for
Israel are essential to enable
the Israelis to defend them-

selves and to bring an end
to the aggression that was
launched against them by
Egypt and Syria on Oct. 6.
Moreover, these funds are
necessary to assure that,
after the present hostilities
have ceased, Israel will be
in a position to provide for
her own security. The great
lesson of this tragic war is
that aggression can be de-
terred and peace can be
achieved only through

strength; and Israel must
now, as never before, remain
strong.
"It is my firm conviction
that a strong and secure Is-
rael is vital to the national
security of the United States;
to our efforts to assure that
the Soviet Union does not
gain primacy in the Middle
East, and, in the long run,
to assure that the vast petro-
leum reserves of the Persian
Gulf do not fall into hands

sufficiently responsive to So-
viet policy so that they would
be denied to us and our allies
in future contingencies. The
present cutbacks of oil from
the Middle East, while seri-
ous in the extreme, are
child's play compared to
what the Western world
might expect if the Soviets
were to obtain primacy in
the Persian Gulf. Israel is a
vital ally in preventing this
from happening."
