Volunteers Show Community
Spirit; More Money Is Sought
The small staff of the Flint
Jewish Community Council,
Israel Emergency Fund and
1974 United Jewish Appeal
Flint Campaign were aug-
mented by a force of hun-
dreds of volunteers to answer
phones, address and stuff en-
velopes, run errands, make
calls and type. The emer-
gency thus was met with true
community spirit, the council
reported.
Meanwhile, Pinhas Fellus,
educational director of Beth
Israel Religious School, an-
nounced the setting up of a
special Sherut La'am civilian
volunteer program for young
people age 18-24 who want to
volunteer during Israel's
crisis in manpower.
Only those who are ready
to volunteer for at least six
months can be accepted, and
they will have to pay for
their flight tickets. Volunteers
will be assigned only non-
military functions. A vali-
dated passport and medical
form are needed.
For information, call Fel-
lus, 732-6310.

A special Israel mission,
open to the community, has
been set for the United Jew-
ish Appeal Dec. 2-7.
On the day of arrival, there
will be a briefing on the mili-
tary situation, as well as a
political briefing. Partici-
pants will visit the Golan
Heights and resettled settle-
ments in that area, the Sinai
front (conditions permitting)
and a Field hospital, naval
and air force bases and an
absorption center.
For information, call Rich-
ard Krieger, 767-5922.

Israeli diplomat Dov Sinai,
guest speaker at the Flint
Jewish Community Council's
board of governors meeting
Sunday, said that "This is
the greatest victory we have
ever won. Considering the
opening moves by the Arabs,
we have never had it so bad.
We had the worst possible
configuration that could have
ever been aimed against us
and within a few days, the
tide was turned."
"In the midst of all this up-
heaval, October 1973 was a
peak in Russian immigration.
`What can I do for the coun-
try?' were the first words
spoken on Israeli soil by Rus-
sian immigrants," Sinai said,
but, the people of Israel ask,
'Why am I more responsible
for the resettling of Moroc-
can or Russian Jews than is
my American brother?'
"We both carry the same
responsibility for the people
of Israel," he said. "You are
the wealthiest and we are the
poorest Jews in the free
world, yet we are raising
four times the money you are
raising. I am grateful (with
what you have raised), but
I am not impressed.
"I appeal to you to do
another bit of reckoning with
yourselves. There is no end
to the need," Sinai said.
