Abraham Lincoln.
The leader of the Argentine
Jewish community has asked
President Juan D. Peron to
stop anti-Semitic attacks in
Argentina and to use his
prestige to bring about a just
peace in the Middle East.
Dr. Sion Cohen Imach,
head of the DAIA, made his
plea during a 40-minute audi-
ence with Peron.
Dr. Imach said the Jewish
community was concerned

Detroit Educator Leads National
Commission on Bias in School Texts

Dr. M a x Rosenberg, a
member of the staff of the
Detroit Public Schools, has
been named to head a na-
tional commission to d e a 1
with the continuing problem
of bias in school textbooks
and other instructional mate-
rials.
The commission on cultural
pluralism in instructional
materials has been estab-
lished by the Association for
Supervision and Curriculum
Development, a national or-
ganization of 25,000 educators
across the country.
Dr. Rosenberg said there is
"a clear and continuing need
for such a national commis-
sion to seek to discover and
to apply sound solutions to a
serious [problem. A v e r y
large number of the textbooks
and other learning materials
used in our schools present
views of our society, our
history and our people that
are biased, incomplete, inac-
curate and unbalanced. They
are unfair to women and to
racial-ethnic-religious minor-
ities."
All citizens should be made
aware of the ongoing battle
for better books, he said. "The
struggle will be won when
the books and other instruc-
tional materials used in
American schools meet high
standards both in curriculum
content as well as in fair
and inclusive treatment of
women and minority groups
— in a word, when they meet
the needs of students in a
pluralistic democracy."
Dr. Rosenberg h a s pre-
pared a set of "Criteria for
Evaluating the Treatment of
Minority Groups and Women
in Textbooks and Other
Learning Materials," which
appears in the November 1973
issue of "Educational Lead-
ership."
Dr. Rosenberg, editor of the
Detroit Public Schools Staff
Journal, "Quest," is on the
staffs of two national educa-
tor journals and the author
of a volume on philosophy.
With regard to the treat-
ment of Jews in school text-
books some progress has

been made, said Dr. Rosen-
berg, "but, as in the case of
other minorities, the progress
has not been consistent. In
the Detroit 'schools, there is a
conscious effort to meet with
publishers; still, large num-
bers of our textbooks are not
satisfactory."
The study will begin with
public schools only but many
of the same textbooks are in
use in private schools, he
said. He hopes that specific

recommendations for action
will emerge from the com-
mission project.
"The problem is with pub-
lishers and with educators
who are willing to settle for
the best available," Dr. Ro-
senberg said, adding that
"the best available is not
good enough."

Conversion Plan
Due for Immigrants

Where else will you find suits and sport coats
designed by Pierre Cardin for a 13 yr. old. Or
a size range that goes from 6 slim to 22?
Husky's included (that's a little guy?)

Or free alterations by great tailors?

And Princeton doesn't only cater to
Bar-Mitzvas or Weddings.

There is quite a selection of Fall fashions in Bag
Pants — Shirts — Sweaters — Winter Jackets
Shirt Suits and Layered Looks.

Be it for Lad or Dad.

But there is an ulterior motive behind all this dedication to the little guy.

If Princeton is the only place he can turn to when he's a boy,
where do you think he's going to shop when he grows up?

LONDON — Israel Chief
Rabbi Shlomo Goren outlined
a plan at a conference here
for the establishment of a
special center for conversion
of non-Jewish spouses of new
immigrants. The center is
designed to prepare them for
conversion to Judaism and
will be suited to immigrants
of various cultural back-
grounds.
Rabbi Goren explained that
3 per cent of the Russian
immigrants come with non-
Jewish spouses. He added
that the initiative for the
establishment of the center
was shared by the Jewish
Agency and the absorption
ministry.
He categorically rejected
the decision adopted by the
rabbis of the Conservative
movement in the U.S. which
allowed women to be in-
cluded in a minyan. He said,
"I did not even know of this
decision until the matter was
brought to my attention.
There is no room for discus-
sion on this issue. It is not
a question of discrimination.
This is a religious law based
on the nature of the universe
which cannot be altered by
a decision of the rabbis."
