Ben Aharon OKs Corridor Plan to 3rd Army Only if Israeli POWs Traded
NEW YORK (JTA) — and a $5,000,000 goal for the
Yitzhak Ben Aharon, secre- Israel Histadrut Campaign.
tary general of Histadrut,
Ben Aharon, noting the
said here that he did not ob- series of diplomatic breaks
ect to a permanent corridor between African countries
to supply food and water to and Israel, told of the action
the encircled Egyptian 3rd of many graduates of His-
army on the Suez Canal if tadrut's Afro-Asian In4itute
Egypt reciprocated on the
prisoner of war issue, that he
did not believe the Soviet
Union is bent on the destruc-
tion of Israel; and that the
Israeli people have not
turned hawkish as a result
of the latest Middle East war.
Ben Aharon, who heads
Israel's powerful trade union
ganization and is himself
outspoken dove, made his
remarks in an interview with
reporters at the New York
Hilton Hotel.
He is the first leading Is-
raeli figure to comment pub-
licly on the "corridor" plan
which a State Department
spokesman said last week
was "a possible compromise"
to settle outstanding cease-
fire issues.
The Histadrut leader noted
that while the Arabs have
almost a Nazi mentality re-
garding Israel and want a
"final solution." This is not
shared by the Soviet Union,
which, he said, has no desire
to see Israel pushed into the
sea.
Israel, he said, is an im-
portant element in the Soviet
strategy, and if it didn't
exist, the Russians would in-
vent it. He said the USSR
made an "excellent business"
from Israel's existence, con-
sidering the vast sums earned
by the Soviet armaments in-
dustry in supplying the Arab
states with weapons against
Israel.
Ben Aharon said a settle-
ment could be reached if the
U.S. and USSR want to avoid
a new Mideast war. He said
he thought the time was ripe
now for a full inquiry into
the failures that led to Is-
rael being caught by surprise
on Oct. 6.
in Tel Aviv. "These gradu-
ates do not share the views
of their governments vis-a-
vis Israel. We have received
letters of support from many
of them, smuggled out of
their countries to us."
As to the Arabs inside Is-
rael, and those in the Gaza
Strip, the West Bank, and on
the Golan Heights, "there has
not been a single case of
sabotage," he stated.
Israel's labor movement
will not "surrender our so-
cial - ideals" because that
would constitute "surrender
to the Arab countries around
us, it would be the greatest
Arab victory."
In the view of Ben Aharon,
Israel faces a three-fold en-
emy: Soviet imperialism,
Arab oil and "the cowardice
of other countries who fol-
low narrow nationalist in-
terests, 'as in the days of
Munich."

be the beneficiaries of Eliza-

and showmanship. On Satur-

tion here that raised $200,-

Miss Taylor was both
auctioneer and bidder as she
sold the pearl necklace she
was wearing for $800 and
bought a diamond collar for
$2,400. She even auctoined
the hammer she wielded
during the bidding, which
went, along with a kiss, for
$2,200.
The film actress inter-
rupted film work in Germany
to take part in the auction
for Amsterdam's Collective

Hundreds had to be turned
away from the door, although
they were willing to pay the
$50 admission.
You don't buy a coat just to keep the rain
off your back: You want something you can
wear in a lot of different places besides out
in a storm. An all-weather coat.
That's why Osmun's salesmen try to find
out a little more about you beyond your size.
So they can recommend a coat that'll
make you shine even when the sun doesn't.
And Osmun's carries a large selection to
choose from. Both in short and long cuts.
With the trim, no-nonsense style of a Mike
Hammer. Or the flair of a James Bond. Or
the intrigue of a Sherlock Holmes.
So when you're ready for a new coat, try
the store that treats you as more than
a size.
