Students in the United
Hebrew Schools deeply felt
the emergency in Israel.
In response the Hebrew
high school held Israel soli-
darity assembly programs, a
memorial service for fallen
soldiers and a fund-raising
effort. The student council
organized a car wash and
forwarded proceeds to the
Israel Emergency Fund.
In another project invol-
ving all schools, students
wrote letters of encourage-
ment to Israeli soldiers, ex-

pressing their solidarity with
Israel. The letters were sent
to the ministry of defense
for distribution.
Elementary students at-
tended assemblies, and Is-
rael and the American-
Jewish relationship with the
Jewish state were topics of
classroom discussions.
In toto, the student body
of the United Hebrew Schools
contributed $2,500 as its 1973
Allied Jewish Campaign
pledge, and another $1,500
for emergency use in the
1974 campaign.

Rabbi Joseph B. Glaser,
executive vice president of
the Reform rabbinic associa-
tion, asserted that "The
diplomatic courtesy of the
`right to reply' should not
countenance statements of
naked prejudice which are
beyond the confines of any
particular national state."
The CCAR statement, mail-
ed to Waldheim, Scali and
the current presidents of
both the General Assembly
and the Security Council,
makes no reference to any
individual, but calls atten-
tion to remarks made during
the Security Council debates
of Oct. 23 and 24.
Rabbi Glaser indicated that
the rabbis were citing Saudi
Arabian UN Ambassador
Baroody. He also noted that
on other occasions USSR am-
bassador to the UN, Yacov
Malik, • had uttered "anti-
Semitic" references.
Scali was asked by the
CCAR to "publicly challenge
any and all outbursts of
other delegates bearing on
this issue," and to initiate
the adoption of rules by the
chairmen at any UN meet-
ing to both "prevent and
handle" such a problem.
