Trial of Mengele Is Unlikely, Judge Says
NEW YORK—An investi-
gating judge in the case of
Dr. Joseph Mengele, accused
of performing experimental
surgery on hundreds of
Auschwitz inmates who later
died, said there was a slim
chance of bringing the ac-
cused to trial.
the Nazi physician sought
for the last 22 years for al-
leged mass murders during
World War II. Believed to be
living in a remote village in
Paraguay, Dr. Mengele ap-
parently is willing to talk
about his past, von Glase-
napp's witnesses reported.
The West German judge,
Horst von Glasenapp, said
he had spoken with several
reliable witnesses who had
conversed with Dr. Mengele,
Mengele, known as "the
angel of death," was report-
ed to be in the village of
Pedro Cabellero, near the
Brazilian frontier.
