Coney Island Life Is 'a Jungle' to Aged

NEW YORK — Thousands
of Jewish senior citizens in
the Coney Island area have
found their situation there to
be like "living in a jungle,"
according to a city-financed
study by the Metropolitan
New York Coordinating Coun-
cil on Jewish Poverty.
The study found that peo-
ple who responded said they
were afraid to go out at night,
and that many more mug-
gings were taking place dur-
ing the day.
The council said 89.7 per
cent of the community lead-
ers in the area said crime
was their most important
concern. Most said that "in-

tensified police protection"
was their greatest need, and
teen-age gangs constituted "a
growing problem."
The study found the area
to be "a primary example of
an area in transition." Sea
Gate, a predominantly Jew-
ish community, was found to
be a middle-income commun-
ity whose "boundary wall
has become a fortification of
chain link and barbed wire,"
but where residents must go
outside to shop and work.

"Legends of Jerusalem"

Near Jerusalem stood the
Lodge of Accountants, and
all who had accounts to
render or business to trans-
act would repair to it.
This lodge was placed out-
side the city, because of the
words in Psalms: "In this
city of our God, His holy
mountain, Fair in situation,
the joy of the whole earth;
even Mount Zion."
And how could anyone
whose heart is troubled with
cares of business be regard-
ed as joyous?
