cause of freedom."
He expressed hope that
Austria would reverse its de-
cision, made in the face of
demands by Arab gunmen
holding hostages, to close
the .camp used as a transit
facility for Jews emigrating
from the Soviet Union to
Israel.
"But if the decision is not
reversed," Dr. Hyatt said,
"let us hope and pray that
the U. S. will find ways and
means of supporting the
cause of freedom as it did
with the Berlin airlift." He
added that America has "a
moral responsibility for the
fate of Soviet Jews."
Recalling the persecution
of Jews by Hitler, Dr. Hyatt
said current activities of
Arab terrorists were "as
lawless and immoral as were
those of the Fuehrer's SS
men."
"Capitulation to this sort
of blackmail can repeat the
ignominy of the 1930s when
free nations failed to rally to
the cause of their oppressed
brothers and continued to do
business as usual."
Dr. Hyatt and his wife

Religious News Service
NEW YORK — Dr. David
Hyatt, president of the Na-
tional Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews, in a state-
ment on the Middle East
crisis, pledged "strongest
moral support to our Jewish
brothers in America, Israel,
and throughout the world."
He appealed for a cease
fire that would recognize
Israel's right to exist within
secure boundaries. And he
urged that Israelis and Arabs
"negotiate among themselves
an enduring and just peace."
The present conflict in the
Middle East, he said, "con-
stitutes the greatest peril for
both Israelis and Arabs and,
indeed, for the peace of man_
kind."
Dr. Hyatt expressed "deep
moral outrage that the Arab
attack was launched on the
Jewish holy day of Yom
Kippur," the day most holy
to the Jews, and described it
as "a sacrilege that cannot
be too strongly condemned."
The NCCJ president also
stressed that "oil diplomacy"
should have no place in de-
termining United States
policies toward the Middle
East.
"Above all, we wish for
peace," he said. "We pray
that on this 25th anniversary
of Israel's birth, there shall
be made alive the Shalom
for which the world yearns."
A week earlier, Hyatt de-
scribed Austria's decision to

Isaac Stern Gives
Special Performance

JERUSALEM — Violinist
Isaac Stern, who played 13
benefit concerts in six days
here, was particularly touch-
ed on a visit to Tel Has-
homer Hospital.
"There was a boy with
burns, very bad," he re-
lated. "He said he liked
music. May I play? Yes.
Bach? Wonderful; do you
mind if I close my eyes
while you play? I said,
dream away. . I played. I
played. I touched him, and
I left."
