Fleischman, director of the Kennedy Galleries, Inc., of New York, who recently was asked to acquire the Ameri- can art collection for the Vatican, will speak on "The Vatican and American Art," 8 p.m. Saturday at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. A recep- tion will follow the free lec- ture. Almost 60 per cent of American art selected by the Vatican to be exhibited in its museum of world art is by American Jewish artists, ac- cording to Fleischman, who Caricatures for your party By SAM FIELD co-founded the Archives of American Art. The only criterion for any of the purchases is that the work transmit some religious or spiritual feeling — "not a difficult prerequisite," said Fleischman, who always felt one could not "separate the experience of looking at great works of art from being in a beautiful synagogue or church." Fleischman, the son of Stella and Arthur Fleisch- man, became a fulltime art dealer in 1966, when he bought a half-interest in the Kennedy Galleries. The lecture-reception is being hosted by the fine arts division of Shaarey Zedek's cultural commission, of which Dr. Harvey Beaver is chairman. Maxwell Katzen is cultural commission chair- man and Mrs. Sidney Winer co-chairman. Mrs. David Kliger is chairman of public relations. Sheila Ordin, chairman of the council, said the 420 family names on the list represent some 3,000 individuals. She said Dennis Rice, direc- tor of Bnai Brith Metropolitan Detroit Council, Volunteered the use of the Bnai Brith of- fice as a distribution point and said Bnai Brith Youth Organization members would form a mitzva corps to dis- tribute the canned goods. For information, call Mrs. Ordin, 353-9463, or Rice, 354-5721. Earlier, the Jewish Com- munity Council, in a mailing to presidents of affiliated or- ganizations, noted that there are indigent and aged Jews living in the central city and downtown areas who are helped by nondenominational emergency food distribution centers. Myra Gross, the National Council of Jewish Women representative on the Gover- nor's Ad Hoc Committee on Hunger and Malnutrition, is coordinating the effort in the Jewish community under JCCouncil auspices. She said that every one of the 12 emergency food dis- tribution centers in Detroit is in need of funds, volunteers and foodstuffs. She said in- volvement can be as mini- mal as bringing a can of food to a meeting for collec- tion and subsequent delivery to a food center, or as direct as volunteering to drive re- cipients to food centers or working there. The latter in- cludes inventorying food, stocking shelves or serving meals. Interested organizations or individuals may call Mrs. Gross, 541-4985, between 5 and 7 p.m., or Rubyjean Gould at the Jewish Commu- nity Council office, 962-1880. Enroll For Fall!
