THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Officers Picked at Knollwood

Richard D. Bleznak has
been re-elected president of
Knollwood Country Club for
1973-74.
Also elected for one-year
terms were Irvin Meekler,
vice president; Alvin Stein-
man, treasurer; Alan E.
Luckoff, secretary; David
Hermelin assistant treas-
urer; and Raymond Fenley,
assistant secretary.

Elected to three-year terms
on the board of directors
were Daniel M. Clark, Dr.
Stuart Hamburger, William
Klinsky, and Jack Milen.
Alvin Steinman was re-elec-
ted to a three-year term.
Bleznak announced that
the entire Knollwood club
house operation will be closed
until April 1 when a com-
pletely remodeled and re-
furbished club house will
open with newly enlarged
men's and ladies' locker
rooms and a new mixed grill.
Golf and winter sports
operations will be headquar-
tered in the winter sports
lounge.

The excitement of modern
Israel will be blended with
ancient folklore and histori-
cal tradition as the Inbal
Dance Theater of Israel per-
forms at the Detroit Institute
of Arts 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7.
Because their tour coin-
cided with the crisis in Is-
rael, the 30-member troupe,
directed by Sara Levi-Tanai,
has pledged all of its profits
to the Israel Emergency
Fund.
On the program are works
of a richly oriental cast, rep-
resenting the heritage of the
Yemenite Jews. The presen-
tation is - the first in this
country since 1970.
Inbal was founded by

Miss Levi-Tanai in 1949. At
that time, the entire popula-
tion of Yemen was flown to
Israel from the Southwest
corner of the Arabian penin-
sula where it had existed in
total isolation from the rest
of the Jewish world for 2,500
years.

During this period, the
Yemenites lived almost sole-
ly according to the teachings
of the Bible, and their isola-
tion preserved their ancient
institutions, traditions and
dances. To keep this fascinat-
ing heritage alive, Inbal was
formed, all its members be-
ing either Yem -mite-born or
Israeli-born of Yemenite par-
entage.

They that give up essential
liberty to obtain a little tem-
porary safety deserve neither
liberty nor safety. —Benja-
min Franklin.

MAGICIAN
A vailable For All Occasions

Inbal means "clapper of
the bell," that which makes
the music in a silent shell.
The music of Inbal, adapt-
ed by Miss Levi-Tanai, has
been arranged by prominent
Israeli composers according
to their own personal inter-
pretations.
Ancient instruments such
as the oud, the shofar, the
chang and various flutes,
drums and tambourines are
supplemented by the finger
cymbals and ankle bells worn
by the dancers. In the sing-
ing and chanting of Inbal's
songs, many influences have
been traced: Spanish flamen-
co, Moorish lament, Gregor-
ian chant.
In Israel, Inbal performs
six nights a week in cities,
villages, border settlements
and army camps.
The troupe is under the
exclusive management of
Sheldon Soffer and is sup-
ported by the America-Israel
Cultural Foundation. For

tickets, contact the Detroit
Institute of Arts, 831-4678 or
831-0360, or J. L. Hudson
