Native Detroiter at Tel Aviv U. Teaches History of U.S. Jews

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, October 26, 1973-29

By HEIDI PRESS
What's a nice Jewish boy
who wrote about the history
of the Jews in Detroit up to
World War I doing in a place
like Israel? He's teaching
American Jewish history to
Israeli students.
Dr. Robert Rockaway, 34,
a native Detroiter who lec-
tures at Tel Aviv University,
wanted to teach in Israel
and be a "pioneer" by bridg-
'rig the gap between the
American and Israeli Jew-
ries.
"I wanted to give of my-
self in a direct way. It's just
as important as donating

thousands of dollars to Is-
rael," he said.
Dr. Rockaway found that
living in Israel can be "pain-
ful. There are a lot of diffi-
culties for Americans in Is-
rael." He cited the Israeli
bureaucracy, standard of
living and economy as ex-
amples.
Dr. Rockaway,' who re-
ceived his BA at Wayne State
University, and his MA and
PhD degrees from the Uni-
versity of Michigan, also
specializes in A m eric an
urban and ethnic history. He
picked his dissertation topic
on Detroit because "I was
interested in the history of
the Jews of the United States.
The two-year project was
funded by a research grant
from the National Founda-
tion for Jewish Culture and
the Jewish Community
Foundation of Detroit.
"The opportunity (feach-
ing position) at Tel Aviv Uni-
versity opened up like a
dream. I wrote letters to

he said.
During his first year at the
university as a martzeh —
lecturer — he lectured in
English, and during his sec-

said he hopes to use more
Hebrew because all of his
students in the regular pro-

Outpatient Surgical Coordinator
Reassures Anxious Sinai Patients

Sinai Hospital has hired a
former surgical intensive
care nurse to humanize its
outpatient surgery program-
providing personal contact to
reassure anxious patients.
Ailene Hric had nursed
seriously ill surgical patients
for over seven years, show-
ing a talent for recognizing
anxiety and alleviating it. In
June, she began her new
duties as outpatient surgical
coordinator.
Every patient who comes
in is welcomed by Mrs. Hric,
who explains what they will
encounter as they proceed
to the preoperative holding,
area, surgery and the recov-
ery room. She discusses their
anxieties, fears and prob-
lems.
In many cases, she refers
them to the social service de-
partment for additional help
with financial advice, family
counseling or psychiatric
assistance.
Frequently, she accom-

Reflecting on the w a r,
which had begun shortly be-
fore, Rockaway s a i d, "I
haven't slept for four days.
It's a tragedy, the shortage
of men in Israel . . . They
just don't have enough peo-
ple."
He foresaw cutbacks at the
university because of the war
and the need for money for
defense. _
He described Tel Aviv U.
as being like Wayne State
University in that it has an
urban environment. There
are 14,500 students, including
older people and army vet-
erans. They represent every
socio-economic le v el and
every nationality.
Among Dr. Rockaway's
works are a soon-to-be-pub-
lished article on E a s t e r n
European Jews appearing in
the YIVO Annual of Jewish
Social Sciences, an article on
anti-Semitism in Detroit ap-
pearing in the American
Jewish Historical Quarterly
and an in-progress history of
Jewish immigration to the
U.S. with co-author Prof.
Marc. L. Raphael of Ohio
State University.

patients to the preoperative
area and stays with them
until they become more re-
laxed. While in that area, she
will visit with other patients.
Frightened children react
immediately to Mrs. Hric,
who has four children of her
own, the youngest 19.
She also checks patients
when they are in the re-
covery room. Often it is nec-
essary for her to make phone
calls to arrange for someone
to pick them up or to go to
the pharmacy for their medi-
cation. She reports to fami-
lies on their progress. Many
of her duties relieve other
personnel to devote more
time to their primary func-
tions in nursing care or ad-
mitting procedures.
Mrs. Hric graduated from
Sinai's Shapero School of
Nursing 10 years ago and
has worked at Sinai Hospital
since then. In 1971, she was
Sinai's LPN of the year and
a finalist for the city of De-
troit. A native of Chicago,
she now lives in Oak Park
with her family.
