Shaare Zedek Hospital Goes Military in War of Judgment Day

Jewish Book Month Heralds
25th Anniversary of Israel

JERUSALEM — On the
Day of Judgment, Oct. 6,
when war came once again
to Israel, Shaare Zedek Hos-
pital in Jerusalem became a
military hospital.
The 71-year-old hospital
that had served Jerusalem
and environs in every emer-
gency and crisis, in a matter
of a few hours had converted
into a fully equipped and
prepared military hospital to
care for the wounded. The
director general's office was
converted into operational
headquarters, and senior
staff had mapped out sched-
ules to assure that a full
staff would be available
around the clock.
Volunteers came into the
hospital in droves and as-
signments were made. Car
pools were created, capable
of handling all problems in-
cluding the transportation of
hundreds of nurses and
medical staff who now work-
ed in 12-hour shifts.
From first aid medical
treatment on the battlefields,
the badly wounded were be-
ing evacuated by helicopter
to the nearest hospital.

The National Jewish Welfare Board has designated
Nov. 16-Dec. 16 as Jewish Book Month, according to Dr.
Eugene B. Borowitz, president of JWB's Jewish Book Coun-
cil. With the theme "Israel: Land of the Book," the month
will be the culmination of the year-long celebration of
Israel's 25th anniversary.

• During each year of his last term as Treasurer, Gronkowski has
earned over $1,000,000 for the City, helping to prevent the reduc-

• These accomplishments and more have been made without an in-
crease of personnel in the Treasurer's office for six consecutive
years despite tremendously increased work load and during a period
when the assessed valuation alone has gone up more than 40% in
