Political Skirmishes Erupt in Israel as i deast S hoot ing %tar bans Down

JERUSALEM (JTA)—
Likud leader Menahem Begin
assailed the government in
the Knesset late Tuesday
night for accepting the cease

fire which he said invited
further wars. But, though he
clearly outlined his criticism
of the government's activi-
ties immediately preceding

the war, he said he would not
go into detail about this so i
long as the fighting went on.
He did, however, quote
U.S. Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger who had said that
three times in the week be-
fore Yom Kippur the U.S.
had asked Israel if the Arab
troop concentrations meant
that war was imminent, and
three times the answer had
been "unlikely to the point
of impossible."
There had been a grave
fault there, and it was the
government not the army in-
telligence which must take
ultimate responsibility for
not deploying Israel's de-
fenses in good time, Begin
said.
Regarding the cease fire,
Begin said it awarded Syria
and Egypt a prize for aggres-
sion. Everyone in the Knesset
wanted, of course, an end to
the bloodshed, but the cease-
fire resolution, calling as, it
did for immediate implemen-
tation of 242, accepted at the
present strategic circum-
stances, _would not end war
but invite the next war.
In a dramatic after-mid-
night h a r a n g u e, Begin
sharply questioned Mrs.
Meir's assurances that para-
graph two (242) and para-
graph three (negotiations)
were necessarily linked. The
question was, said Begin, not
if Israel or the U.S. believed
they were linked but if the
Arabs believed it and they
had already declared they
did not. The Arabs were now
awaiting the beginning of Is-
raeli withdrawal under 242
and felt no urge to begin
peace talks till then.
He also protested at a re-

port that Kissinger had said t
the detente could remain un-
affected by the Mideast war
just as friendship between
adults can survive squab-
bling among their children.
This was a disgraceful way
to talk about a nation fight-
ing for its life, said Begin.
He said he could only hope
Kissinger had not in fact
made the statement. The
Jews were the most adult
people on earth and who bet-
ter than Kissinger knew this?
Likud late Monday issued
a sharp statement assailing
the government's acceptance
of the cease fire, charging
that it contained the seeds of
a future war.
The Likud statement ap-
peared the Harbinger of a
no-holds -barred political
struggle. Begin had for-
warned after six days of war
that he would have many and
serious questions when the
war was over—and he would
demand answers. He prom-
ised for the sake of national
unity to hold his peace so
long as war went on — but
Monday night he apparently
considered it was time to
launch his attack.
Likud will emerge from
this war with their Gen. Arik
Sharon's already enormous
popularity enhanced even
further, thanks to his dash
and daring in the war in the
south. The full story of his
exploits last week is still not
published, but the legend-
weavers are already busy.
Photographs of him in the
newspapers last week with
his grey shock of hair emerg-
ing atop a head bandage as
he careered around the desert
