Holiday in Israel
Lacks Merriment

JERUSALEM (JTA) — It
was a strange—even a som-
ber Shemini Atzeret/Simhat
Torah in Israel this year.
The focal point of many
synagogue services was not
the hakafot celebrations, but
instead the Yizkor prayer for
the dead with everyone, even
people who have no dead rel-
atives to mourn, joining in
the national mourning for the
fallen.
There was no "second hak-
afot" out in the streets
Thursday night. No one was
in the mood, and the black-
out made it impossible any-
way. Synagogues kept the
Simhat Torah celebrations to
a bare minimum required by
Halakha and to please the
children for whom Simhat
Torah is long anticipated
with glee.
The Army Chief Chaplain
Mordechai Piron issued or-
ders for hakafot• to be held
in all army encampments as
circumstances allowed. The
soldier's welfare board and
myriad private individuals
sent packages to the front to
make the festival as pleasant
as possible for the fighters.
By government order, bus-
es ran to and from vital
factories which have been al-
lowed to work on the festival,
and also to and from hospi-
tals (for visiting wounded)
and to and from army camps
inland.
