The action to assume res-
ponsibility for 100 per cent
of the current development
budget of $642,000,000 was
taken after the Israel Bond
national campaign cabinet
heard a detailed report by
Israel Finance Minister Pin-
has Sapir on the heavy cost
of the war which began on
Oct. 6, especially the enor-
mous strain which it has
placed on the country's eco-
nomy.
Sapir estimated that the
cost of the war as of Tues-
day was $2,500,000,000 and
that this was by far the
costliest war in Israel's en-
tire existence.
Rothberg reported that dur-
ing the first week of hostil-
ities the national Israel Bond
Organization had sold a total

been collected in cash.

The Hebrew department at
the Jewish Center is process-
ing all applicants who wish
to take part in kibutz volun-
teer programs during the
crisis.
There are two alternatives:
the American Zionist Youth
Foundation-sponsored Sherut
La'am program, for young
people age 18-24 who wish to
spend a minimum of six
months in Israel; and the
Kibutz Aliya Desk, the Amer-
ican section of all kibutz
movements in Israel, which
will accept volunteers age 18-
35 who will spend a minimum
of one month in Israel.
Olek Netzer will provide in-
formation on Sherut La'am.
Tzvika Zidner, H a b o n i m
shaliakh, and Paul Lupu of
Hashomer Hatzair will proc-
ess those who wish to par-
ticipate in the Kibutz Aliya
Desk program. For informa-
tion, call the Center, DI 1-
4200. In both cases, the par-
ticipant must pay his own
way, approximately $450.
The Israel Aliya Center re-
ports a surge in aliya partic-
ularly among those who had
planned to emigrate later. A
spokesman figured there had
been more than 100 calls
from persons seeking infor-
mation on volunteering their
services. Although some
have asked to join the Israel
army, there has been no such
request from Israel for man-
power, they are told.
Professionals may call the
Israel Aliya Center, 559-6755,
to have their names listed.
Physicians may contact Dr.
Eugene Pious, of the Ameri-
can Physicians Fellowship,
Inc., at 872-1959.
Volunteers to Israel
on Sherut La'am Program
NEW YORK (JTA) — One
hundred American youths age
18-24 left Sunday as the first
contingent of volunteers for
Israel under the Sher u t
La'am program.
M r s . Charlotte Jacobson,
chairman of the World Zion-
ist Organization — American
Section, said arrangements
for their placement on kibut-
zim and other agricultural
settlements had been made
by the WZO office in Jeru-
salem.
Another 300 youths of the
almost 30,000 who have con-
tacted the AZYF to volunteer
to go to Israel were expected
to leave during this week,
Mrs. Jacobson said.
