Travel throughout Israel is
speedy because the country
is so small, and often a few
hours' leave for a service-
man will allow him time to
get home. Hitchhikers are
eager to spend eight hours
on the road just to spend
three or four hours with their
families. "Will it be over
soon?" was the question dis-
cussed by a driver and his
rider. "Inshallah," said the
Israeli-born driver, who, flu-
ent in Arabic, saw no irony
in using the Moslem phrase
for "God willing."

tions on Golan Heights, was
overrun by Syrian commando
men on the first day of the
war and was captured.
This was revealed here
after efforts to investigate
the fate of the Israeli soldiers
of this position have failed.
Israeli authorities requested
the Red Cross to investigate
the matter but Syrians made
no reply. The soldiers were
thus declared as missing.
Druze villagers living on

the slopes of Mount Hermon
said that several Syrian heli-
copters appeared from no-
where at 2 p.m. on Yom Kip-
pur and assaulted the posi-
tion. One of the helicopters
was set afire by the Israelis
defending the position. How-
ever, the Syrian commandos
succeeded in overpowering
the defenders. The position
is now surrounded by Israelis
who shell the area where
Syrian forces are still de-
ployed.

ing the arms and equipment
of the Arab states' armies
bear little resemblance to the
actual numbers of tanks and

Cairo and Damascus. These
were considerably more nu-
merous than the published
figures. Together with the
quantity and quality of the

Syrian and Egyptian aggres-

intensive and planned build-

American interests.
5. Russian complicity and
support for the Arabs in their

the most practical expression
in the massive and immedi-

equipment to replace Arab
losses destroyed in Israel's
defense effort. The outcome
of this effort has not yet been
decided and Israel's determi.
nation and skill has yet to
face the severest of tests.
