LATE AARON ZEITLIN

Visiting the Sick

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1973, JTA, Inc.)

The origin of the virtue of
visiting the sick is defined
as follows:
The Jewish code of law
(Shulhan Arukh-Yore Dea
335) cites this requirement
as a religious law. The Tal-
mud (Nedarim 39B) cites
this practice as a great vir-
tue and explains that visiting
the sick helps relieve him of
part of his illness.
Some moralists explain that
while there is no specific law
in the Bible commanding a
man to visit the sick, Vie
practice comes under the
general requirement of emu-
lating the Almighty who is
often projected as a God of
concern. Man, being in the
image of God, must likewise
be concerned.
The rabbis explain that the
Almighty's visit to Abraham
was for the purpose of visit-
ing a sick man, since .
ham had just undergone--r-

curncision. The Alm i g h t y,
therefore, showed the ex-
ample for all humanity to
follow.
