Peter Wiernik (1865-1936) was editor-in-chief of the now defunct Jewish Morning Journal. Prior to the forma- tion of that Yiddish news- paper he was on the staff of Dos Yiddishe Tageblatt which was merged with the Morning Journal. He was given his first as- signment by Leon Zolotkoff, who was editor of the Chi- cago Jewish Courier, and he followed Zolotkoff to New York for the subsequent as- signments. The Zolotkoff name also is recalled with the republica- tion by Hermon Press of Wiernik's "History of the Jews in America," which first appeared in 1912, was reprinted in 1930. and is now out in a third edition with a survey, by Irving J. Sloan, of 40 years of Jewish life in America, 1932-1972. Zolotkoff was here for a brief period as executive di- rector of the Detroit District of the Zionist Organization of America. Wiernik's history began with the discovery of Amer- ica. It dealt with every aspect of Jewish life, and covered Jewish activities in all states of the Union. Interestingly, his refer- ences to Michigan and De- troit, while outdated, all-too- brief and incomplete, serve as reminders of the past. He wrote: "Michigan, which became a state 11 years before Wis- consin, received its first Jewish settlers about the same time. About a dozen families of Bavarian Jews settled in Detroit in ,1848. Ac- cording to an account written by Dr. Leo M. Franklin (b. in Cambridge City, Ind., 1870; rabbi of Temple Bet El, Detroit. since 1899), it was due to Isaac Cozens, and more especially his wife, Sophie, with whom he ar- rived in Detroit from New York about 1850, that the Bet El Society was estab- lished in that year. In April 1851, steps were taken to in- corporate the congregation by 'the undersigned Israel- ites of the City of Detroit for the purpose of forming a society to provide themselves a place of public worship, teachers of their religion and a burial ground, and give such society the name of Congregation Bet El.' The signatures attached to the petition for incorporation are those of Jacob Silberman, Solomon Bendit (d. in St. Clair, Mich., 1902), Joseph Friedman, Max Cohen, Adam Hirsch, Alex Hein, Jacob Long, Aaron Joel Friedland- er, Louis Bresler and C. F. Bresler; an exact minyan, or the minimum number, re- quired for the formation of a synagogue. Like most con- gregations of that period, Bet El was Orthodox in its ritual, but it was not long before the Reform spirit be- gan to create divisions in the community. In 1861 a large number of the members withdrew because of the in- troduction of an organ and a mixed choir into the syna- gogue, and they formed the Congregation Shaare Zedek, of which Rev. A. M. Hersh- man is now the rabbi. The first rabbi of Congregation Bet El was Rev. Samuel Marcus, and he was followed by a number of well known rabbis, including Liebman Adler, Isidor Kalish, Kauf- man Kohler, Henry Zirndorf and Louis Grossman." Wiernik was both historian and sociologist, and in his history, the first of the kind to be published as a review of the story of American Jewry, he touched upon the many aspects of Jewish fife. He gave an account of American protests against anti-Semitism, dating back to the Damascus Blood Libel, as well as the subsequent events in Romania, Russia and wherever there was dis- crimination. He reviewed the Jewish role in the Civil War and commented upon the many personalities who were in- volved in the many experi- ences. He was especially well qualified to deal with the labor movement, with the re- ligious activities, the emer- gence of Reform and Con- servative Judaism, etc. There is a supplement that deals with the history of Jews in Canada, Cuba, Mexico and other South American lands. Sloan's 18-page updated 'Being Fruitful' Tradition Under Ingle's Scrutiny Ethical codes and tradi- tional injunctions are inter- spersed in "Who Should Have Children? An Environmental and Genetic Approach" by Dwight J. Ingle, published by Bobbs-Merrill Co. The author discusses, among numerous other as- pects of the questions he poses, the guide utilized by many from Genesis 9:1 "And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, `Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.' " While many take pride in having large families, Dr. Ingle states: "Some people have always believed it was harmful to most women to bear large numbers of chil- dren and that a woman should not conceive an un- wanted child." The author, who is profes- sor of physiology at the Uni- versity of Chicago, deals with such questions as environ- ment and parental responsi- bility in evaluating w h o should have :children and he offers guidelines which in- clude: Society must control population 'growth; parent- hood is not an obligation and no woman should be required to bear an unwanted child; there are risks and some cou- ples should remain childless; a child should have a sound biological endowment a n d environment; "couples who are highly qualified for par- enthood may be encouraged to have larger-than-average families;" moral guides to selective population; "pro- grams of selective population control should be in the hands of the medical profession and a new professional class of social scientists trained to judge qualifications for par- enthood." Hitch your wagon to a star. —Ralph Waldo Emerson. HERSHEL AND GAIL EPSTEIN DAVID and DANNY 23719 Wendy Lane, Southfield "Forty Years of Jewish Life in America" summarizes the events in the era 1932-1972. It touches upon many mat- ters, including the Jewish role in World War II. He mentions a Detroiter, Lt. Raymond Zussman, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor. While mostly outdated, Wiernik's history neverthe- less arouses unusual interest with its comments that bring to mind attitudes of half a century ago. For historians the reprinted book retains many values. P.S Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Friedlaender and Family Wish All Their Friends and Relatives A Healthy, Happy New Year. MR. & MRS. J.
