NEW YORK—The rabbi of
the world's largest Reform
temple, the Rev. Dr. Nathan
A. Perilman of T e m p l e
Emanu-E1 here, announced
to his congregation on Rosh
Hashana that he will retire
Jan. 1 after more than 41
years in that post.
Rabbi Perilman, 68, said
his family will take up resi-
dence in Chapel Hill, N.C. He
was ordained at Hebrew Un-
ion College and has spent his
entire career at the 128-year-
old temple.

p e o p l e without necessarily
having any special purpose
in mind.
While many holiday cus-
toms are intended to draw
the people closer to the Al-
mighty for s o m e special
motif, the day of Shmini
Atzeret indicates that after
having experienced the spe-
cial occasions, the people are
now willing to be in the com-
pany of the Creator without
having any special reasons
to celebrate. Some commen-
taries like to consider this
additional day as a symbol
of the eschatological era to
come when man's interest
will be completely spiritual.
Thus, there are no physical
symbols for this holiday like
there are for the Sukkot
holiday.
* * *
Why is it that on this holi-
day and on the following day
of Simhat Torah a celebra-
tion with the holy Tor a h
takes place?
The Torah scroll represents
the covenant between God
and Israel. It is strictly a
spiritual symbol. Dancing and
marching with the scroll in-
dicates how happy the Jew
is just to be in the presence
of the Creator without any
other ulterior motive.
