tries of the earth, provides
the Mt. Carmel city with an
excellent claim to fame.
Gathering for a world con-
ference recently in Haifa
were several hundred Bahai
delegates, representing the
National Spiritual Assem-
blies of Bahai in more
than 100 nations. They were
here to elect the nine-mem-
ber Universal House of Jus-
tice, which is the supreme
governing body of their faith,
and to discuss directions of
development in the next 10
years.
They also took part in a
ceremony dedicating the site
of building for the world
headquarters of their relig-
ion.
It will be the third major
structure in the Bahai com-
pound in Haifa, visited every
year by thousands of tour-
ists who know little about thin
fascinating and strikingly
modern faith.
For the average tourist,
Bahai means mostly the
marble shrine and its golden
dome which has become a
Haifa landmark, and the
magnificent gardens in which
it is situated. Across the
road, he observes the ar-
chives building, styled as a
Greek temple and blending
into the mountain.
But for the Bahai believer,
coming to Haifa on a pilgrim-
age is a privilege granted
only to a select number each
year.
The Bahai faith originated
in Persia, where the first
Bahai leader, called the
"Bab" or Forerunner, broke
away in 1844 from Islam and
announced the coming of a
new prophet of God. The Bab
was executed, but one of his
followers named Baha'ullah,
meaning the Glory of God,
some years later announced
a revelation that he was the
Prophet. He was banished
and imprisoned several times
and finally sent to Acre in
Palestine in 1868. He died in
Acre in 1892, having formu-
lated the principles of the
Bahai faith in his extensive
writings.
His son, Abbas Effendi,
traveled widely spreading the
faith. During his tour of the
United States in 1912, it was
said of him that "he walks a
mystical path with practical
feet." He was succeeded by
his son, Shoghi Effendi,
whose main work was he
translation into English of
Baha'ullah's writings ,and
the develoment of the Bahai
gardens on Mt. Carmel
around the tomb of the Bab,
whose remains were previ-
ously brought to Palestine.
After Shoghi's death, gov-
ernance passed to the nine-
member body. Four are
Americans, two English and
two Persian. They live in
Haifa, and were all re-elected
in the recent conference.
Bahai is a universalist re-
ligion with a basic premise
of the unity of mankind, as
the Bahai prophet has said:
"Ye are all leaves of one
tree and fruits of one or-
chard." The religion's uni-
versal nature is evident in
the distribution of the 68,000
out the world, from South
and Central America to the
Far East. The total number
is not known, since Bahai of-
ficials refer to centers rather
than individuals. But they
are undoubtedly counted in
the millions.

JOHN KEYSTONE
The prophet of Bahai con-
sidered himself as a mes-
senger of God "in this day,"
as the previous great relig-
ious figures, including Abra-
ham, Moses, Jesus and Mo-
hammed were messengers in
their day. Thus, the scrip-
tures of the other religions
are regarded as holy to the
Bahai, and readings from
them form part of the sim-
ple Bahai ritual. There are
no priests or ecclesiastic
officials. Bahai is opposed to
war and violence of all kinds.
Followers of the faith prac-
tice political non-interven-
tion, accepting in each coun-
try the existing government
and political system.
Yet, the fact that the cen-
ter of Bahai is in Israel has
caused serious hardship to
members of the faith in Arab
countries. The most severe
measures were taken in Iraq
and Egypt. The Bahai, how-
ever, refrain from protest
and demonstration, and are
in fact very sensitive about
publicity of the situation in
Arab countries. They feel it
is best to call minimum at-
tention to themselves under
these adverse circumstances.
In Israel, the Bahai enjoy
a cordial relationship with
the authorities. Their long
association with Haifa has
made them part of the city's
life and history. At the same
time, they consciously re-
frain from promoting their
religion among Israelis. They
obviously want to do nothing
that would strain relations
with the country which hosts
their world center.
The Bahai prophet and his
son foresaw the return of the
Jews to Palestine and the
restoration of the glory of
their past. In Nazi Germany
the Bahai were told by the
authorities to purge them-
selves of members with Jew-
ish background. They de-
clined to do so and were
consequently banned.
