Naguib's Memoirs, Published in Lebanon, Assail Nasser; CIA Linked in Revelations By MOSHE RON Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV—The Lebanese weekly El Hawadir has be- gun the publication of the memoirs of former Egyptian President General Moham- med Naguib, who together with the late Cranial Abdel Nasser carried out the re- volution of Egyptian officers in 1952. Two years later he was removed by Nasser and since then he has been un- der house arrest outside Cairo with a strong guard posted outside his home. During that time, Naguib's wife died and his son was murdered in West Germany, under mysterious circum- stances. Now, 19 years after his house arrest, Naguib has been set free by President Sadat. He has started reveal. ing secrets which will cer- tainly not contribute any hon- or to Nasser's memory. The pub- lication was fostered by Sadat partisans who had to emigrate from Egypt during Nasser's rule and who sought revenge. The editor of the Egyptian daily El Ghoumhouria, Salim El Lauzi, a friend of Sadat, edited the memoirs for 18,000 pounds sterling and sold them to several newspa- pers abroad, thus making a profitable deal. The memoirs are concern- ed with the eve of the offi- cers' revolution against King Farouk, the war in Palestine in 1948, and Naguib's two years' rule. Under special attack in his memoirs is the editor of El A h r a m, Hassanein Heikal, who is accused of receiving money from King Farouk's propaganda bureau, as well as from the American CIA. He takes revenge for the fact that Heikal was instrumental in removing him from his of- fice 19 years ago. The mem- oirs are in the form of talks with Naguib. When Lauzi asked him whether he in- tended damaging Nasser's image by his memoirs, he denied it. "I have no grudge Dr. and Mrs. Orris S. It is anyone's guess how Nasser's old colleagues will react to these memoirs. The Union of Nasserist Forces in Beirut has publish- ed an announcement in the Lebanese press against Gen- eral Naguib. It accuses Na- guib of intending to damage the prestige of the great leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and that the publication of the memoirs was fostered by the American CIA. It is no secret that F dent Sadat is trying to wedK- en the Nasser cult in Egypt and that he will be in favor of the memoirs of General Naguib, which will reveal many secrets about Nasser and his regime.
