Phillip Stollman, chairman
of Detroit Friends of Bar-

the university grew from an
enrollment of 80, 18 years
ago, to the present 6,000.
Dr. Fill, who visited the
school a month ago, related
his experiences and told of
the impressive attainment in
evidence on the campus in
Ramat Gan in Israel.
Both appealed for increased
support of the school and
urged contributions towards
the scholarship funds.
The musical program at the
dinner was provided by Rivka
Raz, who was accompanied
by Leo Assfari.
Cantor Louis Klein led in
the singing of the national
anthems. Rabbi Karpol Ben-
der of Israel, Bar-Ilan direc-

Medals Recalling Holocaust
The Holocaust and the
Warsaw Ghetto are com-
memorated in medals issued
by the Judaic Heritage So-
ciety„ coinciding with the
High Holy Days.
To recall this tragic period,
which lasted from Hitler's
ascent to power in 1933 until
the demise of "The 1000-Year
Reich" on May 7, 1945, de-
signer Oscar Harris and
sculptor Vincent Miller have
rendered another in the ser-
ies, the Medallic History of
the Jewish People.
On the obverse of the med-
al is the figure of a naked
and bearded Jew, enveloped
in flames, with arms raised
to heaven. Above him, in He-
brew lettering formed by the
tongues of flame, are the
first two words of the central
Hebrew prayer: Shema Yis-
rael (Hear, 0' Israel), the
traditional affirmation of the
Jews' monotheistic faith.
Jewish martyrs, throughout
the centuries, have gone to
their deaths with these words
on their lips.
The legend on the reverse
of the medal reads: "Holo-
caust: Most Tragic Period of
Jewish Diaspora. Cold-blood-
ed Nazi German persecution,
murder and near-extermina-
tion of the Jewish people,
1933-1945."

The Warsaw Ghetto Medal,
also designed by Oscar Har-
ris, recalls when some 40,000
emaciated and physically ex-
hausted civilians held the
Nazi forces at bay for 42
days. Although most of the
Jews perished in the battle
which destroyed the ghetto,
they inflicted grievous losses
on the enemy.
Sculptor Ernest Lauser has
rendered a symbolic group
of Jewish resistance fighters,
three men and a woman with
flimsy weapons, against a
backdrop of the burning sy-
nagogue of Warsaw.
On the reverse of the med-
al, the legend reads: "War-

Wandering Jew's
Heroic Dignity
By LOUIS GOLDING
In "The Jewish Problem"
At the threshold of these
expulsions (from European
countries), it was necessary
for the Jew only to accept a
formula in order to be saved
the pangs of exile. The ac-
ceptance of a single drop of
baptismal water was enough
to entitle him to remain and
enjoy his property, the
scenes in which he had been
brought up and the land
where his fathers lay buried,
and to avoid the hideous un-
certainty of the future which
lay before him. There were,
of course, some Jews who
chose that easier way. But
they were a tiny minority.
The ungainly figure of the
Wandering Jew, clad in rags,
footsore, weary, and penni-
less, snatching repose for a
few moments until some new
storm buffeted him on to-
ward a new stage in his
wanderings — that ungainly
figure acquires a heroic dig-
nity when one realizes that
he could have thrown off his
rags, and clad himself in
scarlet, and enjoyed peace
and quiet and affluence, by
pronouncing one single word
— a word which he did not
