Washington a Friend of Israel

for independence than any
other man. You can see that
by reading Morris' diaries.
He is mentioned more than
anyone else.
So naturally, Washington
was a friend of Israel, he
couldn't be a sympathizer of
the Zionist movement; there
wasn't any during his time.
The first President to ac-
tually endorse the Zionist
idea was Washington's suc-
cessor, John Adams. He did
so in a letter to Mordecai
Manuel Noah, who is gener-
ally regarded as the first
American Zionist. Adams
wrote a very strong letter
of endorsement. Of course, if
there had been such a move-
ment in Washington's time,
he would also have been
sympathetic. Else why does
the Jewish National Fund
maintain a Washington For-
est in Israel?
