LANDO
in Chile Paper Denied
by Leader Minister
Moshe Dayan hopes two-year-old refusal to let the same time, Israel would ern coast.
BUENOS AIRES (JTA)—A
report that a newspaper in
Santiago, El Mercurio, car-
ried a letter to the editor
referring to a "Jewish Com-
munist conspiracy" in Chile
that had to be destroyed, was
categorically denied by Dr.
Gil Sinay, president of the
Representative Committee of
Chilean Jews.
In a telephone conversation
with Mark Turkow, secretary
of the Latin American Jewish
Congress, Dr. Sinay said that
in fact El Mercurio published
ar "Pm dealing with the par-
t Lion of the Chilean rab-
biL.L.Le in an ecumenical serv-
ice marking the 163rd anni-
versary of Chile's independ-
ence.
The service was attended
by leaders of the present
government and three for-
mer presidents of Chile.
Dr. Sinay reported that El
Mercurio reproduced a state-
ment by Rabbi Angel Krei-
man in which he expressed
adherence to a call by the
leaders of the Catholic and
Protestant faiths in the coun•
try for peace and concord.
Dr. Sinay reiterated to Tur-
kow the statement he made
earlier that the Jewish com-
munity in Chile has no prob-
lems of any kind and that
its activities are normal.
Publication of the letter
was reported earlier by the
Canadian Broadcasting Cor-
poration in Toronto on its
radio news feature program
"As It Happens."
.(A spokesman for CBC told
the Jewish Telegraphic Ag-
ency in New York that the
report came from a free
lance correspondent in San-
tiago who had been asked to
confirm an earlier report.
(The CBC spokesman ex-
plained that the program may
not have made it sufficiently
clear that anti-Semitic arti-
cles and propaganda in news-
papers had appeared before
the military coup occurred
but not since then.)
On Tuesday, the Belgian
Foreign Affairs Ministry an-
nounced the arrest and im-
prisonment by the Chilean
junta of Jacques Zylberberg,
sociology professor at Con-
ception University in Chile.
The ministry said it was
taking steps to try and obtain
the professor's release as well
as that of two other Belgian
nationals.
Mrs. Zylberberg, who lives
in Brussels, confirmed to the
J TA correspondent that her
husband had been teaching at
the university f o r several
years. She said he had been
arrested, according to the
junta, for his "political ac-
tivities." No further informa-
tion was immediately avail-
able.
In Jerusalem, sources said
Israel will shortly recognize
the new junta in Chile.
The junta has sent Israel
— and presumably other
countries — a formal note
informing it of the change in
government.
Under accepted diplomatic
procedure, a reply to this
note would mean in practice
that Israel recognizes the
new government. The foreign
ministry intends to reply
shortly.
There is no need for for-
mal recognition since the
junta professes to be the
continuation of the govern-
ment in Chile.

act as an intermediary. The

confident the Israeli cabinet
would approve his proposal.

In New York, Jacques
Torczyner, co-president of the
World Union of General Zion-
ists, expressed surprise at the
message cabled by the Is-
raeli Labor Party to the
chairman of the Socialist In-
ternational in Vienna deplor-
ing the military coup in Chile.
While the regime of the
late President Allende was
not unfriendly to Israel, it
was moving in the direction
of participating actively in
the policies of the Third
World countries, he said,
adding that only the revolu-
tionary situation in Chile
prevented Allende from at-
tending the nonaligned con-
ference in Algiers.

Abba Eban recently visited
Brazil and Bolivia, both

Agree on Issues
TORONTO (JTA)—A two-
day Canadian Zionist Feder-
ation national executive
meeting was described by
Phillip Givens, president, as
the "most successful meet-
ing in the history of the CZF
with a general consensus on
all the important items ex-
pressed by all shades of
opinion across the Canadian
Zionist spectrum."
Givens told the seminar
that he was convinced after
talks with members of the
Trudeau administration that
the present government will
continue to support Israel.
Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut of
Holy Blossom Temple in
Toronto urged the creation
of a permanent staff that
could relate to all Jewish
youth in Canada. He said
everyone talks about youth
education as the number one
priority, but it isn't. "Thou-
sands of dollars are squan-
dered on youth movements
and Israeli shlikhim who
cater to small groups of
youth," he said.
Let me make the news-
papers, and I care not what
is preached in the pulpit or
what is enacted in Congress.
